Systems and methods of determining optical data storage lifespan
An optical data system includes an optical storage medium, and a header region encoded with lifespan data indicative of a predicted useful lifespan. The optical storage system also includes one or more portions encoded with stored data, a read subsystem, one or more lasers configured to focus light on the optical storage medium, and one or more detectors configured to read the lifespan data and the stored data. Further, the optical storage system includes a control system including one or more processors and memory storing instructions executable by the control system to cause the control system to control the read subsystem to read the lifespan data by focusing the one or more lasers within the header region, determine an expected lifespan, control the read subsystem to detect a decay state of the stored data, and provide a health state of the optical storage medium.
1 . An optical data system, comprising:
an optical storage medium;
a header region of the optical storage medium encoded with lifespan data, wherein the lifespan data is indicative of a predicted useful lifespan associated with the optical storage medium;
one or more portions of the optical storage medium encoded with stored data;
a read subsystem;
one or more lasers of the read subsystem, wherein the one or more lasers are configured to focus light on the optical storage medium;
one or more detectors of the read subsystem, wherein the one or more detectors are configured to read the lifespan data and the stored data based on detecting an interaction of the light with the optical storage medium;
a control system comprising one or more processors; and
memory storing instructions executable by the control system to cause the control system to:
control the read subsystem to read the lifespan data by focusing the one or more lasers within the header region;
determine an expected lifespan based on the lifespan data;
control the read subsystem to detect a decay state of the stored data based on a readability of the stored data; and
provide a health state of the optical storage medium based on the expected lifespan and the decay state.
2 . The optical data system of claim 1 , wherein the lifespan data includes an indication of life expectancy for the stored data, which is stored by the optical storage medium.
3 . The optical data system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more lasers comprise a pulsed laser, a continuous wave laser, and/or a quasi-continuous wave laser.
4 . The optical data system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more lasers are configured to emit light ranging from 200 nm to 1650 nm.
5 . The optical data system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more detectors comprise a photodetector.
6 . The optical data system of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the lifespan data is defined based on a writing date of the optical storage medium.
7 . The optical data system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions are executable by the control system to cause the control system to detect the decay state of the stored data based on comparing a known calibration value to a corresponding value stored on the optical storage medium and identifying any discrepancies indicative of decay.
8 . The optical data system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions are executable by the control system to cause the control system to detect the decay state of the stored data based on:
comparing a known calibration value and a corresponding value stored on the optical storage medium; and
identifying of an elapsed time between an initial storage of the corresponding value and a respective read of the corresponding value stored on the optical storage medium.

The optical data system of claim 1 , wherein the read subsystem comprises a base configured to support the optical storage medium and enable rotation of the optical storage medium relative to the one or more lasers and the one or more detectors to facilitate reading of various locations within and/or on the optical storage medium.
10 . The optical data system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions are executable by the control system to cause the control system to detect the decay state of the stored data based on readability of the stored data as analyzed based on an efficacy of the one or more detectors to read the stored data.
11 . A method of determining a health state of an optical storage medium, the method comprising:
directing, from at least one emitter, focused light to a location within a header region of the optical storage medium, wherein the location includes different physical states of the optical storage medium corresponding to stored data including lifespan data encoded within the header region of the optical storage medium;
detecting reflected light from the optical storage medium with a reader, wherein the reflected light is the focused light reflected from the location;
processing the reflected light into read data;
determining an expected lifespan based on a life expectancy of the optical storage medium, wherein the life expectancy is based on the lifespan data encoded within the header region of the optical storage medium;
determining a decay state of the stored data based on readability of the read data;
correlating the life expectancy and the decay state of the stored data to provide a correlation; and
providing the health state of the optical storage medium based on the correlation.
12 . The method of claim 11 , comprising directing additional focused light to the header region of the optical storage medium and detecting additional reflected light from the header region with the reader to identify the lifespan data stored in the header region of the optical storage medium, wherein the lifespan data represents a predicted value for a useful lifespan of the optical storage medium.
13 . The method of claim 11 , comprising directing the focused light from a laser system and rotating the optical storage medium relative to the laser system to identify multiple data values stored in and on the optical storage medium.
14 . The method of claim 11 , comprising:
levitating the optical storage medium above a base, wherein the base is configured to support the optical storage medium; and
rotating the optical storage medium around an axis.
15 . The method of claim 11 , wherein directing the focused light from the at least one emitter comprises focusing a plurality of lasers of a laser system on the optical storage medium.
16 . The method of claim 11 , comprising:
receiving the health state of the optical storage medium;
determining that the stored data is unreliable based on the health state; and
limiting use of the stored data based on determining that the stored data is unreliable.
17 . An optical data system, comprising:
an optical storage medium, wherein the optical storage medium comprises:
a header region encoded with lifespan data;
a read subsystem comprising:
a base, wherein the base is configured to support the optical storage medium;
a laser system comprising:
one or more lasers configured to focus light on one or more surfaces of the optical storage medium;
one or more detectors configured to read the lifespan data or stored data of one or more surfaces of the optical storage medium based on the focused light;
a control system comprising one or more processors; and
memory storing instructions executable by the control system to cause the control system to:
control the laser system to read the lifespan data within the header region of the optical storage medium;
determine an expected lifespan based on a life expectancy of the optical storage medium, wherein the life expectancy is based on a writing date of the optical storage medium;
control the laser system to detect a decay state of the stored data, wherein the decay state is based on a readability of the stored data, and wherein the readability of the stored data is analyzed by the laser system based on an efficacy of the one or more detectors to read the stored data of the one or more surfaces of the optical storage medium;
correlate the life expectancy and the decay state of the stored data; and
provide a health state of the optical storage medium based on the correlation.
18 . The optical data system of claim 17 , wherein the one or more detectors of the laser system is a photodetector.
19 . The optical data system of claim 17 , wherein the expected lifespan is determined by analyzing the writing date of the optical storage medium and wherein the expected lifespan is determine based on an amount of time that has elapsed since the writing date.

The optical data system of claim 17 , wherein the one or more lasers of the laser system comprise at least one or a combination of a pulsed laser, a continuous wave laser, and/or quasi-continuous wave laser, and wherein the one or more lasers of the laser system emit light ranging from 200 nm to 1650 nm.
