Abstract

Disclosed are various embodiments for dynamic location update and verification for radio units in radio-based networks. In one embodiment, a current location of a radio unit in a radio-based network is automatically detected. It is determined that the current location differs from a registered location of the radio unit. One or more actions are initiated in response to determining that the current location differs from the registered location.

Claims (42)

1 . A system, comprising:

a radio-based network comprising a plurality of radio units, individual ones of the plurality of radio units having a respective registered location with a spectrum allocation service; and

at least one computing device configured to manage the radio-based network by at least:

receive a current location of at least one radio unit of the plurality of radio units from the at least one radio unit, the current location being determined based at least in part on a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) device in or co-located with the at least one radio unit;

determine that the current location differs from the respective registered location of the at least one radio unit;

determine whether a current spectrum allocation of the at least one radio unit is permitted to be used at the current location;

register a different spectrum allocation for the current location with the spectrum allocation service; and

configure the at least one radio unit to use the different spectrum allocation instead of the current spectrum allocation.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the current location is determined further based at least in part on a round-trip time for a communication between the at least one radio unit and another device.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one computing device is further configured to at least revoke the current spectrum allocation.

4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one radio unit is a Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) enabled device.

5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the current location differs from the respective registered location in elevation.

6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the respective registered location is indoors within a building, and the current location is outside of the building.

7 . A computer-implemented method, comprising:

automatically detecting a current location of a radio unit in a radio-based network;

determining that the current location differs from a registered location of the radio unit;

registering a different spectrum allocation for the current location with a spectrum allocation service in response to determining that the current location differs from the registered location; and

configuring the radio unit to use the different spectrum allocation instead of a current spectrum allocation.

8 . The computer-implemented method of claim 7 , further comprising sending a notification to an administrative user associated with the radio-based network.

9 . The computer-implemented method of claim 7 , further comprising initiating a registration change from the registered location to the current location of the radio unit with the spectrum allocation service.

10 . The computer-implemented method of claim 7 , further comprising disabling a radio interface of the radio unit.

11 . The computer-implemented method of claim 7 , wherein automatically detecting the current location further comprises:

automatically detecting the current location by a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) device in the radio unit.

12 . The computer-implemented method of claim 7 , wherein automatically detecting the current location further comprises:

automatically detecting the current location based at least in part on:

a location of at least one of: a user equipment (UE) device or a different radio unit, and

a round-trip time for at least one of: a communication between the UE device and the radio unit, or a communication between the radio unit and a different radio unit.

13 . The computer-implemented method of claim 7 , wherein automatically detecting the current location further comprises:

automatically detecting the current location based at least in part on a location of a server and a round-trip time for a communication between the server and the radio unit via a communication network.

14 . The computer-implemented method of claim 7 , wherein automatically detecting the current location further comprises:

automatically detecting the current location based at least in part on an offset from a time maintained by the radio unit and a time maintained by another device.

15 . A computer-implemented method, comprising:

determining, by a radio unit of a radio-based network, a current location of the radio unit;

determining, by the radio unit, whether the current location differs from a registered location of the radio unit by at least a threshold;

altering an operation of the radio unit in response to determining that the current location differs from the registered location by at least the threshold;

registering a different spectrum allocation for the current location with a spectrum allocation service; and

configuring the radio unit to use the different spectrum allocation instead of a current spectrum allocation.

16 . The computer-implemented method of claim 15 , further comprising querying, by the radio unit, a service to determine the registered location.

17 . The computer-implemented method of claim 15 , further comprising causing a notification to be sent to an administrative user in response to determining that the current location differs from the registered location by at least the threshold.

18 . The computer-implemented method of claim 15 , wherein altering the operation of the radio unit further comprises reducing a transmission power of a radio interface of the radio unit until the radio unit is configured to use the different spectrum allocation.

19 . The computer-implemented method of claim 15 , wherein altering the operation of the radio unit further comprises disabling the radio unit until the radio unit is configured to use the different spectrum allocation.

20 . The computer-implemented method of claim 7 , wherein determining that the current location differs from the registered location of the radio unit is based at least in part on determining that an unexpectedly strong signal strength from the radio unit is reported by at least one of: a receiving radio unit or a receiving user equipment (UE).
