Abstract

A rack is provided. In one aspect, a rack includes a plurality of trays mounted in the rack in a first orientation. The rack also includes a cable cartridge mounted in the rack in a second orientation perpendicular to the first orientation. The cable cartridge includes (i) connectors configured to connect to tray connectors on respective sides of the plurality of trays and (ii) cables connected to the connectors in the cable cartridge to facilitate communication between the plurality of trays.

Claims (44)

1 . A rack, comprising:

a plurality of trays mounted in the rack in a first orientation; and

a cable cartridge mounted in the rack in a second orientation perpendicular to the first orientation, the cable cartridge comprising (i) connectors configured to connect to tray connectors on respective sides of the plurality of trays and (ii) cables connected to the connectors in the cable cartridge to facilitate communication between the plurality of trays, wherein the cable cartridge has a forward section and a rear section that are movable relative to one another.

2 . The rack of claim 1 , wherein the cable cartridge is disposed on a first side of the rack, the rack further comprising:

a second cable cartridge disposed on a second side opposite the first side, the second cable cartridge comprising (i) connectors configured to connect to tray connectors on respective sides of the plurality of trays and (ii) cables connected to the connectors in the second cable cartridge to facilitate communication between the plurality of trays.

3 . The rack of claim 2 , wherein the cable cartridge and the second cable cartridge are slidable.

4 . The rack of claim 3 , wherein the cable cartridge, the second cable cartridge, and the plurality of the trays can be slid out at a front side of the rack.

5 . The rack of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of trays comprises:

a first plurality of compute trays; and

at least one switch tray,

wherein the connectors of the cable cartridge are configured to connect to the tray connectors of the plurality of compute trays and the tray connectors of the at least one switch tray, and the cables connected to the connectors in the cable cartridge facilitate communication between the plurality of compute trays and the at least one switch tray.

6 . The rack of claim 5 , further comprising:

a second plurality of compute trays disposed on a different side of the at least one switch tray as the plurality of compute trays,

wherein the connectors of the cable cartridge are configured to connect to the tray connectors of the second plurality of compute trays, and the cables connected to the connectors in the cable cartridge facilitate communication between the second plurality of compute trays and the at least one switch tray.

7 . The rack of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of trays and the cable cartridge are part of a first stack in the rack, and wherein the rack further comprises:

a second stack, comprising:

a second plurality of trays mounted in the rack; and

a second cable cartridge comprising (i) connectors configured to connect to tray connectors on respective sides of the second plurality of trays and (ii) cables connected to the connectors in the second cable cartridge to facilitate communication between the second plurality of trays.

8 . The rack of claim 7 , further comprising:

a stack-interconnecting cable cartridge disposed between the first stack and the second stack, the stack-interconnecting cable cartridge comprising cables and connectors for connecting at least one of the plurality of trays in the first stack to at least one of second plurality of trays in the second stack.

9 . The rack of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of trays and the cable cartridge are part of a first stack in the rack, and wherein the rack further comprises:

a second stack, comprising:

a second plurality of trays mounted on the rack; and

a second cable cartridge comprising (i) connectors configured to connect to tray connectors on respective sides of the second plurality of trays and (ii) cables connected to the connectors in the second cable cartridge to facilitate communication between the second plurality of trays; and

at least two cable cartridges disposed between the plurality of trays in the first stack and the second plurality of trays in the second stack, the at least two cable cartridges comprising cables and connectors for connecting at least one of the plurality of trays in the first stack to at least one of second plurality of trays in the second stack.

10 . The rack of claim 1 , wherein the cable cartridge has an inner side and an outer side and has a housing in which the connectors and the cables are disposed, and wherein the connectors are arranged at the inner side and spaced from the outer side so as to define an outer volume in which the cables travel to connect to respective pairs of the connectors.

11 . A system, comprising:

a first rack comprising:

a plurality of trays slidably mounted in the first rack; and

a cable cartridge slidably mounted in the first rack, wherein the cable cartridge is disposed between the plurality of trays and a side of the first rack, the cable cartridge comprising (i) connectors configured to connect to tray connectors on respective sides of the plurality of trays and (ii) cables connected to the connectors in the cable cartridge to facilitate communication between the plurality of trays; and

a second rack, comprising:

a second plurality of trays slidably mounted in the second rack; and

a second cable cartridge slidably mounted in the second rack, the second cable cartridge comprising (i) connectors configured to connect to tray connectors on respective sides of the second plurality of trays and (ii) cables connected to the connectors in the second cable cartridge to facilitate communication between the second plurality of trays,

wherein at least one tray of the plurality of trays is interconnected with at least one tray of the second plurality of trays.

12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the at least one tray of the plurality of trays is interconnected with the at least one tray of the second plurality of trays by way of a horizontal cable cartridge.

13 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the at least one tray of the plurality of trays is interconnected with the at least one tray of the second plurality of trays by way of a one or more active cables.

14 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the cable cartridge has a longest length that extends vertically and the plurality of trays each have a longest length, with each of the longest lengths of the plurality of trays extending horizontally.

15 . A rack, comprising:

a plurality of trays mounted in the rack in a first orientation; and

a cable cartridge mounted in the rack in a second orientation perpendicular to the first orientation, the cable cartridge comprising (i) connectors configured to connect to tray connectors on respective sides of the plurality of trays and (ii) cables connected to the connectors in the cable cartridge to facilitate communication between the plurality of trays, wherein the plurality of trays and the cable cartridge are part of a first stack in the rack, and wherein the rack further comprises:

a second stack, comprising:

a second plurality of trays mounted on the rack; and
