Irrigation system having improved construction system and adjustable crown height
An irrigation system having a pipeline supported by one or more towers includes an improved truss connection system having a means for readily adjusting a crown height of the pipeline. A pair of cooperating members define a joint which selectively couples headed ends of adjacent truss rods together to form a truss rail of a truss system that supports the pipeline. A single fastener may fasten the cooperating members, a strut, and a cross-member together at the joint. A length of the truss rail may be decreased by holding the truss rods closer together. In an aspect, the headed ends of the adjacent truss rods are held closer together by inserting a shim in one of the joints. Decreasing the length of the truss rail increases the deflection of the pipeline and raises the crown height.
1 . An adjustable truss joint adapted to control a tension load of a truss rail having a plurality of truss rods coupled end-to-end, the adjustable truss joint comprising:
a first truss rod having a first head;
a second truss rod having a second head;
a first mating member having a first contoured shape; and
a second mating member having a second contoured shape,
wherein the first contoured shape and the second contoured shape cooperate to define a first passageway having a first diameter through which a portion of the first truss rod extends, a second passageway having a second diameter through which a portion of the second truss rod extends, and a retaining pocket within which the first head and the second head are held,
wherein the first head is larger than the first diameter and the second head is larger than the second diameter;
wherein the truss rail is configured to selectively deflect between at least a first position and a second position, the truss rail being in the first position when no shims are present in the retaining pocket, the truss rail being in the second position when a first shim is positioned in the retaining pocket between the first head and the first passageway.
2 . The adjustable truss joint of claim 1 , wherein the truss rail is configured to selectively deflect to a third position, the truss rail being in the third position when a second shim is positioned in the retaining pocket between the second head and the second passageway.
3 . The adjustable truss joint of claim 2 , wherein the truss rail is configured to selectively deflect to a fourth position, the truss rail being in the fourth position when a third shim is positioned in the retaining pocket between the first head and the first shim.
4 . The adjustable truss joint of claim 1 , wherein the truss rail is configured to selectively deflect to a fifth position, the truss rail being in the fifth position when a second shim is position in the retaining pocket between the first head and the first shim.
5 . The adjustable truss joint of claim 1 further comprising a removable fastener for selectively attaching the first mating member to the second mating member.
6 . The adjustable truss joint of claim 5 , wherein the first mating member further comprises a slot, the second mating member further comprises a plug configured to insert into the slot.
7 . An irrigation machine having a pipeline supported by one or more towers and a truss system, the truss system having one or more adjustable truss joints, wherein each of the one or more adjustable truss joints comprise the adjustable truss joint of claim 1 .
8 . The irrigation machine of claim 7 further comprising at least one shim positioned in each retaining pocket of the one or more adjustable truss joints.
