Abstract

An article of footwear may include a sole structure fixedly attached to an upper defining an internal cavity configured to receive a foot of a wearer. The sole structure may include an exposed outer member configured to contact the ground, the exposed outer member including a first aperture, and a sensory feedback member disposed at least partially within the first aperture in the outer member, the sensory feedback member including a first end and a second end. The first end of the sensory feedback member may include a projection extending through the first aperture and configured to contact the ground. In addition, the second end of the sensory feedback member may include a plurality of flexible bristles extending through a portion of the sole structure and exposed to the internal cavity.

Claims (38)

1 . A sole structure of an article of footwear, comprising:

an outer member with a first upper surface and a first lower surface, the outer member having a heel region, a midfoot region, and a forefoot region;

a first plurality of apertures in the outer member, the first plurality of apertures extending through the outer member from the first upper surface to the first lower surface throughout the heel region, the midfoot region, and the forefoot region;

a plurality of recessed portions in the first upper surface of the outer member; and

a plurality of sensory feedback members extending through respective ones of the first plurality of apertures, the plurality of sensory feedback members each including a lower end extending towards the first lower surface of the outer member and an upper end extending away from the first lower surface,

wherein the plurality of sensory feedback members are each movable between a first configuration in which the lower end extends below the first lower surface of the outer member and a second configuration in which the lower end moves upward so that the lower end does not extend below the first lower surface of the outer member,

wherein the lower end of respective ones of the plurality of sensory feedback members comprises a single projection member and the upper end of respective ones of the plurality of sensory feedback members comprises a plurality of projection members,

wherein upon horizontal deflection of the lower end of a respective one of the plurality of sensory feedback members, the upper end of the respective one of the plurality of sensory feedback members deflects horizontally in a direction that is opposite that of the horizontal deflection of the lower end,

wherein each of the plurality of sensory feedback members further comprises a flange member that contacts the first upper surface of the outer member when the sensory feedback members are positioned within a respective aperture, and

wherein the recessed portions include flange-member receiving portions and each of the flange members is received within the flange-member receiving portions.

2 . The sole structure of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of sensory feedback members are interconnected through a plurality of connecting members.

3 . The sole structure of claim 2 , wherein the sole structure further comprises a midsole, and the plurality of connecting members are sandwiched between the midsole and the outer member.

4 . The sole structure of claim 3 , wherein the plurality of connecting members comprise a lattice structure in which each sensory feedback member is connected to at least two other sensory feedback members.

5 . The sole structure of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of recessed portions include connecting-member receiving portions between the at least some of the first plurality of apertures, and the lattice structure of the plurality of connecting members is received within the connecting-member receiving portions.

6 . The sole structure of claim 3 , wherein the midsole comprises a second upper surface, a second lower surface, and a second plurality of apertures extending through the midsole from the second upper surface to the second lower surface.

7 . The sole structure of claim 6 , wherein the upper end of respective ones of the plurality of sensory feedback members extends above the second upper surface of the midsole in at least one of the first or second configurations.

8 . The sole structure of claim 7 , wherein the upper end of respective ones of the plurality of sensory feedback members are flush with the second upper surface of the midsole in the first configurations.

9 . The sole structure of claim 7 , wherein the upper end of respective ones of the plurality of sensory feedback members are disposed below the second upper surface of the midsole in the first configurations.

10 . The sole structure of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of projection members of the upper end of the plurality of sensory feedback members are independently moveable.

11 . The sole structure of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of projection members of the upper end of the plurality of sensory feedback members comprise a plurality of flexible bristles.

12 . The sole structure of claim 1 , wherein the first and second plurality of apertures are circular.

13 . The sole structure of claim 1 , wherein the lower end of the plurality of sensory feedback members has a rounded shape.

14 . The sole structure of claim 1 , wherein the lower end of the plurality of sensory feedback members has a conical shape.

15 . The sole structure of claim 1 , wherein the lower end of the plurality of sensory feedback members has a cylindrical shape.

16 . A sole structure of an article of footwear, comprising:

an outer member with a first upper surface and a first lower surface, the outer member having a heel region, a midfoot region, and a forefoot region;

a first plurality of apertures in the outer member, the first plurality of apertures extending through the outer member from the first upper surface to the first lower surface and being located in each of the heel region, the midfoot region, and the forefoot region;

a midsole with a second upper surface, a second lower surface, and a second plurality of apertures extending through the midsole from the second upper surface to the second lower surface; and

a plurality of sensory feedback members extending through respective ones of the first plurality of apertures, the plurality of sensory feedback members each including a lower end extending towards the first lower surface of the outer member and an upper end extending away from the first lower surface,

wherein the plurality of sensory feedback members are interconnected,

wherein the plurality of sensory feedback members are each movable between a first configuration in which the lower end extends below the first lower surface of the outer member and a second configuration in which the lower end moves upward so that the lower end does not extend below the first lower surface of the outer member,

wherein the lower end of respective ones of the plurality of sensory feedback members comprises a single projection member and the upper end of respective ones of the plurality of sensory feedback members comprises a plurality of projection members,

wherein upon horizontal deflection of the lower end of a respective one of the plurality of sensory feedback members, the upper end of the respective one of the plurality of sensory feedback members deflects horizontally in a direction that is opposite that of the horizontal deflection of the lower end, and
