Abstract

Devices, systems, and methods for monitoring respiration using surface temperature, humidity, air pressure, carbon dioxide gas sensors, pulse oximetry sensors and electromyography sensors, and/or acceleration sensors to obtain information related to respiration rate (RR), exhalation/inhalation strength, exhalation/inhalation volume, exhalation/inhalation acceleration, and/or exhalation/inhalation regularity.

Claims (43)

1 . A device for monitoring one or more respiratory attributes of a user, comprising:

a housing;

a fastener on an outer surface of the housing, wherein the fastener is capable of attaching the housing to an oxygen mask;

two or more sensors located within the housing,

wherein the two or more sensors comprise a temperature sensor configured to detect a surface temperature of the user's skin covered by the oxygen mask when the oxygen mask is placed over the mouth of the user;

one or more processors located within the housing, said one or more processors configured to execute machine executable code causing the one or more processors to:

receive a set of data comprising two or more datasets output from the two or more sensors;

perform an autocorrelation on each of the two or more datasets to determine autocorrelation results;

compare the autocorrelation results with a potential respiratory attribute pattern to determine an average peak correlation for each dataset;

select the dataset with the highest average peak correlation for further analysis;

analyze the selected dataset to determine one or more respiratory attributes;

detect one or more respiratory events based on the determined one or more respiratory attributes;

and

generate an output identifying the detected one or more respiratory events; and

a digital display located within the housing, wherein the machine executable code further causes the one or more processors to display the output on the digital display.

2 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the temperature sensor is a thermopile.

3 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the two or more sensors further comprises a humidity sensor.

4 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the two or more sensors further comprises an air pressure sensor.

5 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more respiratory attributes comprises respiratory rate variability.

6 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the two or more sensors further comprises an accelerometer.

7 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more respiratory attributes comprises the user's respiratory rate.

8 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more respiratory attributes comprises a change in the user's respiratory rate.

9 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more respiratory attributes comprises a waveform depicting the user's respiratory rate.

10 . A system for monitoring one or more respiratory attributes of a user, comprising:

an oxygen mask;

two or more sensors located on the oxygen mask, wherein the two or more sensors comprise a temperature sensor configured to detect a surface temperature of the user's skin covered by the oxygen mask when the oxygen mask is placed over the mouth of the user;

one or more processors located on the oxygen mask, said one or more processors configured to execute the machine executable code causing the one or more processors to:

receive a set of data comprising two or more datasets output from the two or more sensors;

perform an autocorrelation on each of the two or more datasets to determine autocorrelation results;

compare the autocorrelation results with a potential respiratory attribute pattern to determine an average peak correlation for each dataset;

select the dataset with the highest average peak correlation for further analysis;

analyze the selected dataset to determine one or more respiratory attributes;

detect one or more respiratory events based on the determined one or more respiratory attributes; and

generate an output identifying the detected one or more respiratory events; and

a digital display located on the oxygen mask, wherein the machine executable code further causes the one or more processors to display the output on the digital display.

11 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the temperature sensor is a thermopile.

12 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the two or more sensors further comprises a humidity sensor.

13 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the two or more sensors further comprises an air pressure sensor.

14 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the two or more sensors further comprises an accelerometer.

15 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the one or more respiratory attributes comprises respiratory rate variability.

16 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the one or more respiratory attributes comprises the user's respiratory rate.

17 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the one or more respiratory attributes comprises a change in the user's respiratory rate.

18 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the one or more respiratory attributes comprises a waveform depicting the user's respiratory rate.
