Expandable mid-foot osteotomy devices, systems, and methods for treating mid-foot disorders
Devices, systems and methods for surgical treatment of mid-foot disorders such as osteoarthritis, spacing disorders, or alignment disorders, including mid-foot arthroplasty devices and systems for the 2 nd and 3 rd tarsometatarsal (TMT) joint, implants for post-osteotomy spacing and realignment, arthroplasty articular implants, dowel grafts for TMT arthrodesis or fusion, dowel grafts for navicular cuneiform (NC) arthrodesis, dowel grafts for intercuneiform arthrodesis, and/or locking dowels for joint fusion.
. A mid-foot osteotomy device, comprising a biocompatible implant having a wedge shape member having a first lateral planar surface, a second lateral planar surface, a dorsal aspect, and a plantar aspect, an inflation chamber formed between the first lateral planar surface and the second lateral planar surface, a central opening passing laterally through each of the first lateral planar surface and the second lateral planar surface, and means for fixation and compression of two opposing mid-foot bone tissue surfaces through the central annular opening, the wedge-shaped member has an angular taper formed between the first lateral planar surface and the second lateral planar surface and along an entire longitudinal axis of the wedge-shape member, wherein the angular taper is expandable between a pre-implant angle at the dorsal aspect and a post-implant angle at the dorsal aspect under the influence of a fluid input to the inflation chamber, and the post-implant angle at the dorsal aspect is greater than the pre-implant angle at the dorsal aspect such that the first lateral planar surface and the second lateral planar surface are each configured to abut substantially planar bone surfaces of a surgically cut mid-foot bone and provide angular correction thereto.
. The mid-foot osteotomy device of claim 1 , wherein the inflation chamber surrounds the central opening.
. The mid-foot osteotomy device of claim 1 , wherein the biocompatible implant is fabricated of shape memory or superelastic nickel-titanium based alloy.
. The mid-foot osteotomy device of claim 1 , wherein the biocompatible implant is fabricated of a biocompatible material selected from the group consisting of metal, ceramic, composites, polymer, or a synthetic bone growth matrix, or combinations thereof.
. The mid-foot osteotomy device of claim 4 , wherein the metal is selected from the group consisting of shape memory alloys, stainless steel, cobalt-based alloys, and titanium.
. The mid-foot osteotomy device of claim 5 , wherein the metal is a porous metal.
. The mid-foot osteotomy device of claim 4 , further comprising a surface treatment that imparts osteophilic bone growth sites to the biocompatible material.
. The mid-foot osteotomy device according to claim 4 , wherein the ceramic is selected from the group consisting of alumina, zirconia, alumina composites, or oxidized zirconium composites.
. The mid-foot osteotomy device according to claim 4 , wherein the synthetic bone growth matrix is selected from the group consisting of hydroxyapatite, tricalcium phosphate, calcium sulfate, or combinations thereof.
. The mid-foot osteotomy device according to claim 4 , wherein the polymer further comprises a resorbable polymer selected from the group consisting of polylactides, polyglycolides, polycaprolactone, cellulose, chitosan, collagen, hyaluronan, fibrin, or combinations thereof.
. The mid-foot osteotomy device of claim 1 , wherein the wedge-shaped biocompatible implant further comprises an inflatable balloon.
. The mid-foot osteotomy device of claim 11 , wherein the inflatable balloon is microporous.
. The mid-foot osteotomy device of claim 11 , wherein the inflatable balloon is made of a bioresorbable material.
