Abstract

A portable air purifier includes: a housing, partition wall, a baffle, air blower, and hydroxyl generator. The housing has an air inlet and air outlet. The partition wall extends downwardly from a top wall forming first and second vertical chambers. The baffle extends from a first side wall to the partition wall separating the first vertical chamber into upper and lower chambers. The partition wall extends partway to a housing bottom wall providing an interconnection between the lower chamber and second vertical chamber. The blower positioned in the lower chamber creates a pressurize air flow. A particulate filter is positioned between the air inlet and the blower. The hydroxyl generator is positioned in the second vertical chamber and includes a UV bulb. An opening in the partition wall proximate to the top wall permits purified air from the hydroxyl generator to exit through the air outlet.

Claims (24)

1 . A portable air purification system ( 800 ) configured to clean air in a room of a residence, said air purification system comprising:

a hollow housing ( 801 ), said hollow housing comprising:

an air inlet ( 840 ) on a lower portion of a first side wall ( 819 c ) of said hollow housing;

an air outlet ( 841 ) in a top wall ( 819 b ) of said hollow housing;

a partition wall ( 820 a ), said partition wall configured to extend downwardly from said top wall ( 819 b );

wherein said partition wall ( 820 a ) is configured to form a first vertical chamber bounded by said first side wall ( 819 c ) and said partition wall ( 820 a ), and a second vertical chamber bounded by said partition wall ( 820 a ) and a second side wall ( 819 d );

a baffle ( 820 ), said baffle ( 820 ) configured to extend from said first side wall ( 819 c ) to said partition wall ( 820 a ) to separate said first vertical chamber into an upper chamber and a lower chamber;

wherein said baffle ( 820 ) is configured to inhibit fluid communication between said upper chamber and said lower chamber;

wherein said air inlet ( 840 ) is configured to admit room air into said lower chamber;

wherein said partition wall ( 820 a ) is configured to extend down from said top wall ( 819 b ) only partway to a bottom wall ( 819 a ) of said hollow housing to thereby provide an interconnection between said lower chamber and said second vertical chamber;

an air blower ( 850 ), said air blower positioned in said lower chamber of said hollow housing ( 801 ) between said air inlet ( 840 ) and said interconnection between said lower chamber and said second vertical chamber;

wherein said air blower is configured to create a pressurized air flow through said interconnection and into at least said second vertical chamber;

a particulate filter ( 890 ), said particulate filter positioned between said air inlet ( 840 ) and an intake of said air blower ( 850 ), said particulate filter ( 890 ) thereby configured to filter room air before entering said air blower;

a hydroxyl generator ( 830 ), said hydroxyl generator positioned in said second vertical chamber and comprising:

a linearly elongated housing configured to extend parallel to an axial direction of said second vertical chamber, and to extend from a first end to a second end, with an opening to form an air inlet at said first end and an air outlet opening at said second end, to receive the pressurized air flow in said second vertical chamber through said linearly elongated housing;

at least one UV bulb ( 812 ) configured to emit ultraviolet light to generate hydroxyl radicals from water vapor contained within the pressurized air flow; and

means for supporting said at least one UV bulb ( 812 ) within said linearly elongated housing, and for orienting said at least one UV bulb parallel to a direction of the pressurized air flow in said linearly elongated housing; and

an opening in said partition wall ( 820 a ) formed in proximity to said top wall ( 819 b ), to thereby interconnect an upper portion of said second vertical chamber with said upper chamber, and permit the pressurized air that exits said hydroxyl generator to flow into said upper chamber and out of said air outlet ( 841 ).

2 . The portable air purification system ( 800 ) according to claim 1 , wherein said baffle ( 820 ), said partition wall ( 820 a ), said interconnection between said lower chamber and said second vertical chamber, said second vertical chamber, and said upper chamber form a flow path configured to create an S-shaped flow of the air within said hollow housing ( 801 ).

3 . The portable air purification system ( 800 ) according to claim 2 , wherein said linearly elongated housing is formed to have an octagonal cross-sectional shape.

4 . The portable air purification system ( 800 ) according to claim 3 , further comprising: a baffle ( 860 a ) configured to extend from said second side wall ( 819 d ) partway to said partition wall ( 820 a ), to thereby block the UV light exiting said second end of said linearly elongated housing from reaching said air outlet ( 841 ).

5 . The portable air purification system ( 800 ) according to claim 4 , further comprising: a plurality of casters secured to said bottom wall ( 819 a ) to permit rolling movement of said portable air purification system within the residence.

6 . The portable air purification system ( 800 ) according to claim 4 , wherein said hollow housing ( 801 ) is configured to mount to a wall of the room.

7 . The portable air purification system ( 800 ) according to claim 4 , further comprising: a removable cover configured to provide access to said linearly elongated housing to permit replacement of each said at least one UV bulb.
