Abstract

A bipedal robot includes an upper region includes a head and neck assembly having a neck portion and a head portion coupled to the neck portion. Said head portion includes: a frontal shell having a rear edge, a rear shell having a frontal edge, and an illumination assembly. The illumination assembly is configured to illuminate a region that: (i) extends between a rear edge of the frontal shell and an extent of the frontal edge of the rear shell, (ii) is positioned adjacent to the extent of the rear edge of the frontal shell, and (iii) is positioned adjacent to the extent of the frontal edge of the rear shell.

Claims (65)

1 . A bipedal robot having a transverse and a sagittal plane, and wherein said bipedal robot comprises:

an upper region including: (i) a torso, (ii) a pair of arm assemblies coupled to the torso, and (iii) a head and neck assembly coupled to the torso and having:

a head housing assembly with a first shell that includes an outer surface within a curvilinear extent;

a first camera positioned within the head housing assembly and rearward of an extent of the first shell, and whereby a first camera gap is formed between the first camera and an inner surface of the first shell;

a second camera positioned within the head housing assembly and rearward of the extent of the first shell, and whereby a second camera gap is formed between the second camera and an inner surface of the first shell; and

wherein when the head and neck assembly is in a forward facing orientation: (i) the first camera includes a first camera surface that is substantially parallel with the sagittal plane, and (ii) the second camera includes a second camera surface that is substantially parallel with the sagittal plane, and (iii) the head and neck assembly includes a plane: (a) that is substantially parallel with the transverse plane, and (b) intersects the first and second camera surfaces.

2 . The bipedal robot of claim 1 , further comprising a display positioned below the first and second cameras.

3 . The bipedal robot of claim 1 , wherein the first shell does not extend rearward of an auricular region of the head housing assembly.

4 . The bipedal robot of claim 1 , further comprising an end effector and a light emitter configured to illuminate an extent of said end effector.

5 . The bipedal robot of claim 1 , wherein the head and neck assembly includes a fan positioned within the head housing assembly to draw air from outside of the head housing assembly into said head housing assembly.

6 . The bipedal robot of claim 1 , wherein the head and neck assembly includes:

a first region positioned adjacent to a first extent of a first shell edge of the first shell,

a first light emitter configured to illuminate an extent of the first region,

a second region positioned adjacent to a second extent of the first shell edge of the first shell,

a second light emitter configured to illuminate an extent of the second region, and wherein the extent of the second region is positioned on an opposite side of the head housing assembly in comparison to the extent of the first region,

an illumination width that extends between a first outermost point of the extent of the first region and a second outermost point of the extent of the second region,

a first shell width that extends between: (i) a first shell point located on the first shell edge and adjacent to the first region, and (ii) a second shell point located on the first shell edge and adjacent to the second region, and

wherein the first shell width is substantially collinear with the illumination width, said first shell width is less than the illumination width.

7 . The bipedal robot of claim 1 , wherein the first shell is made from a material that is substantially transparent, and the head housing assembly includes a second shell made from an opaque polymeric material.

The bipedal robot of claim 7 , wherein the head housing assembly further includes an intermediate cover that is positioned between the first and second shells and configured to obscure electronics that are positioned between said intermediate cover and a rear extent of the head housing assembly.

9 . The bipedal robot of claim 8 , wherein at least a portion of the intermediate cover is visible through the first shell.

10 . The bipedal robot of claim 1 , wherein the head and neck assembly includes an upper sensor recess and wherein the first shell includes: (i) a first projection that flanks a first side of the upper sensor recess, and (ii) a second projection that flanks a second side of the upper sensor recess.

11 . A bipedal robot comprising:

a head and neck assembly with a horizontal plane and including:

a head portion having:

a first shell including a first shell edge, and wherein when the head and neck assembly is in a forward facing orientation, an obtuse angle is formed between an extent of the first shell edge and the horizontal plane, and

a second shell including an opaque polymeric material and having an extent positioned rearward of the first shell; and

a neck portion having a deformable cover; and

a fan configured to draw air from outside of the head portion into said head portion.

12 . The bipedal robot of claim 11 , wherein the head portion further includes an intermediate cover that is configured to obscure electronics that are positioned between said intermediate cover and the second shell.

13 . The bipedal robot of claim 12 , wherein at least a portion of the intermediate cover is visible through the first shell.

14 . The bipedal robot of claim 11 , further comprising:

a first camera having an extent that is positioned rearward of an extent of the first shell; and

a second camera having an extent that is positioned rearward of the extent of the first shell.

15 . The bipedal robot of claim 11 , wherein the head and neck assembly includes:

a first region positioned adjacent to a first extent of a first shell edge of the first shell,

a first light emitter configured to illuminate an extent of the first region,

a second region positioned adjacent to a second extent of the first shell edge of the first shell,

a second light emitter configured to illuminate an extent of the second region, and wherein the extent of the second region is positioned on an opposite side of the head portion in comparison to the extent of the first region,

an illumination width that extends between a first outermost point of the extent of the first region and a second outermost point of the extent of the second region,

a first shell width that extends between: (i) a first shell point located on the first shell edge and adjacent to the first region, and (ii) a second shell point located on the first shell edge and adjacent to the second region, and

wherein the first shell width is substantially colinear with the illumination width, said first shell width is less than the illumination width.

16 . The bipedal robot of claim 11 , wherein the head portion further includes a speaker.

17 . The bipedal robot of claim 11 , wherein the head portion includes an upper sensor recess and wherein the first shell includes: (i) a first projection that flanks a first side of the upper sensor recess and a second projection that flanks a second side of the upper sensor recess.

18 . A bipedal robot comprising:

a head and neck assembly including: (i) a horizontal plane, and (ii) a first shell with a first shell edge and an outer surface with a curvilinear extent, and wherein said first shell does not extend rearward of an auricular region of the head and neck assembly, and wherein the first shell edge includes:

a first substantially linear extent, and wherein when the head and neck assembly is in a forward facing orientation, an obtuse angle is formed between the first substantially linear extent and the horizontal plane,

a second substantially linear extent that is coplanar with the first substantially linear extent, and

a third extent positioned between the first and second substantially linear extents, and wherein a portion of the third extent is offset from a plane that includes the first and second substantially linear extents.

The bipedal robot of claim 18 , wherein the head and neck assembly further includes an intermediate cover that is at least partially visible through the first shell, and is configured to obscure electronics that are positioned between said intermediate cover and a rear portion of the head and neck assembly.

20 . The bipedal robot of claim 18 , further comprising an illumination assembly that is configured to emit light near the third extent of the first shell edge and is visible from a frontal view of said bipedal robot.

21 . The bipedal robot of claim 18 , further comprising:

a first camera positioned rearward of the first shell; and

a second camera positioned rearward of the first shell.

22 . The bipedal robot of claim 18 , further comprising a display that is positioned rearward of the first shell and includes a first portion that is positioned above the third extent of the first shell edge and a second portion that is positioned below the third extent of the first shell edge.

23 . The bipedal robot of claim 18 , wherein the curvilinear extent in the outer surface is in both a first direction and a second direction that is perpendicular to the first direction.

24 . The bipedal robot of claim 4 , wherein the light emitter is configured to emit different color light, and wherein at least one color of the light that is configured to be emitted indicates an error with a portion of the end effector.

25 . The bipedal robot of claim 6 , wherein the first and second light emitters are configured to emit light, and wherein the color of the emitted light indicates an operating status of the bipedal robot.

26 . The bipedal robot of claim 11 , wherein the first shell includes an outer surface that is curved in a first direction, and a second direction that is perpendicular to the first direction.

27 . The bipedal robot of claim 15 , wherein the first and second light emitters are configured to emit light, and wherein the color of the emitted light indicates an operating status of the bipedal robot.

28 . The bipedal robot of claim 1 , wherein the first shell includes:

a first substantially linear extent,

a second substantially linear extent that is co-planar with the first substantially linear extent, and

a third extent positioned between the first and second substantially linear extents, and wherein a portion of the third extent is offset from a plane that includes the first and second substantially linear extents.

29 . The bipedal robot of claim 18 , further comprising a fan configured to draw air from outside of the head and neck assembly into said head and neck assembly.
