Abstract

A steering system for use in turning steerable vehicle wheels includes a steering wheel and a housing. A pinion is in the housing and connected to the steering wheel via a shaft such that rotation of the steering wheel urges the pinion to rotate about an axis relative to the housing. The pinion has a recess. An elastic element is compressed in the recess between the pinion and the shaft. The elastic element applies an axial force to the pinion that dampens axial movements of the pinion relative to the housing.

Claims (18)

1 . A steering system for use in turning steerable vehicle wheels, the steering system comprising:

a steering wheel;

a housing;

a pinion in the housing and connected to the steering wheel via a shaft such that rotation of the steering wheel urges the pinion to rotate about an axis relative to the housing, the pinion having a recess; and

an elastic element compressed in the recess between the pinion and the shaft, the elastic element applying an axial force to the pinion that dampens axial movements of the pinion relative to the housing.

2 . The steering system of claim 1 , wherein first and second ends of the pinion are each rotatably supported by a bearing.

3 . The steering system of claim 2 , wherein the bearings are tapered roller bearings.

4 . The steering system of claim 2 , wherein a preload of the bearings is adjustable between a high preload, at which the bearings substantially prevent the pinion from moving axially, and a low preload, at which the bearings at least partially permit the axial movements of the pinon.

5 . The steering system of claim 4 , wherein the elastic element dampens the axial movements of the pinion when the bearings have a low preload.

6 . The steering system of claim 4 , further comprising a bearing adjuster for adjusting the preload of the bearings.

7 . The steering system of claim 6 , wherein the bearing adjuster threadably engages the housing, driving the bearing adjuster in one direction increases the preload of the bearings by decreasing axial clearances in the bearings, driving the bearing in an opposite second direction decreases the preload of the bearings by increasing the axial clearances in the bearings.

8 . The steering system of claim 1 , wherein the elastic element directly contacts the pinion and the shaft.

9 . The steering system of claim 1 , wherein the elastic element is located entirely within the recess.

10 . The steering system of claim 1 , further comprising a worm wheel that meshes with the pinion, the pinion and the worm wheel transferring torque from the steering wheel to the steerable vehicle wheels to effect turning of the steerable vehicle wheels.

11 . The steering system of claim 1 , wherein damping the axial movements of the pinion at least partially reduces the amount of NVH in the steering system.

12 . The steering system of claim 1 , wherein the elastic element damps axial movements of the pinon caused by impact forces and/or changes in rotational direction of the pinon.

13 . The steering system of claim 1 , further comprising an electrically powered steering unit for providing steering assist, the electrically powered steering unit having an electric motor connected to a gearbox, the gearbox having the housing in which the pinion and at least a portion of the shaft are supported.

14 . The steering system of claim 13 , further comprising a worm wheel that meshes with the pinion in the housing, the pinion and the worm wheel transferring torque from the steering wheel to the steerable vehicle wheels to effect turning of the steerable vehicle wheels.
