Abstract

A bicycle-implemented transmission method is applied in a transmitter component of a bicycle electronic system. Each component of the system has zero or more pieces of information attributable thereto and is candidate to communication within the system. Each of the attributable pieces of information includes an identifier which is unique in the bicycle electronic system. According to the method: a payload is formed, including an attributable piece of information and an identifier of an instruction executable by an addressee component; a value of a characteristic of a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) service of a Generic Attribute Profile (GATT) server of a BLE network architecture is set to the payload; and the characteristic is transmitted to the addressee component or to a receiver component to which the addressee component is directly or indirectly connected.

Claims (28)

1 . A bicycle-implemented communication method, applied in a bicycle electronic system comprising a plurality of electronic components, each electronic component of the bicycle electronic system having zero or more pieces of information attributable thereto and candidate to communication within the bicycle electronic system, each of said attributable pieces of information comprising an identifier which is unique in the bicycle electronic system, the bicycle-implemented transmission method comprising:

forming, by a first electronic component of the bicycle electronic system, a payload comprising an attributable piece of information and an identifier of an instruction executable by an addressee electronic component,

setting, by the first electronic component, a value of a characteristic of a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) service of a Generic Attribute Profile (GATT) server of a BLE network architecture to said payload, wherein the payload is formatted according to an application-level protocol defined above the GATT layer and independent of GATT attribute semantics;

transmitting, by the first electronic component, the characteristic to a receiver electronic component to which the addressee electronic component is directly or indirectly connected,

interpreting, by the receiver electronic component, the instruction identifier and/or the unique identifier of the attributable piece of information contained in the payload independently of the GATT characteristic type; and

forwarding, by the receiver electronic component, the payload to the addressee electronic component or to a different component to which the addressee component is directly or indirectly connected, based on the instruction and/or the identifier of the attributable piece of information, thereby routing the payload across at least one electronic component of the bicycle electronic system beyond a single BLE client-server relationship.

2 . The bicycle-implemented transmission method according to claim 1 , wherein said payload is devoid of transmission overhead.

3 . The bicycle-implemented transmission method according to claim 1 , wherein, based on the instruction identified by said instruction identifier, said attributable piece of information of said payload either comprises a field value including data or is devoid of said field value.

4 . The bicycle-implemented transmission method according to claim 3 , wherein said field value of said attributable piece of information of said payload contains one or more auxiliary data for execution of the instruction identified by said instruction identifier.

5 . The bicycle-implemented transmission method according to claim 3 , wherein said unique identifier of attributable piece of information of said payload identifies the addresser component, and said instruction identifier identifies an instruction to take note of the contents of said field value of the attributable piece of information of said payload.

6 . The bicycle-implemented transmission method according to claim 5 , wherein said field value contains at least two bits or at least two groups of bits, respectively relative to at least two different properties of the addresser component.

7 . The bicycle-implemented transmission method according to claim 3 , wherein

said unique identifier of attributable piece of information of said payload identifies the addressee electronic component, and

said instruction identifier identifies an instruction other than an instruction to take note of the contents of said field value of the attributable piece of information of said payload.

8 . The bicycle-implemented transmission method according to claim 7 , wherein said instruction other than the instruction to take note is selected from the group consisting of:

i) an instruction to change a value of the attributable piece of information to a value contained in said field value of said payload,

ii) an instruction to request to transmit, in reply, a value of the attributable piece of information of said payload,

iii) an instruction to change access privileges of the attributable piece of information of said payload,

iv) an instruction to request to transmit, in reply, all the attributable pieces of information of the addressee component,

v) an instruction to carry out a specific action on data in a memory of the addressee electronic component,

vi) an instruction to carry out a specific action on one or more devices of the addressee electronic component,

vii) an instruction relative to a specific program of the addressee electronic component,

viii) an instruction representative of an input or manual command received from a cyclist and

combinations thereof.

9 . The bicycle-implemented transmission method according to claim 1 , wherein said unique identifier of attributable piece of information identifies a generic electronic component of the bicycle electronic system, and said instruction identifier identifies an instruction addressed to all electronic components of the bicycle electronic system.

10 . The bicycle-implemented transmission method according to claim 1 , wherein said attributable piece of information of said payload comprises a field indicative of whether the payload is encrypted or not.

11 . A bicycle electronic system comprising a plurality of electronic components

configured to perform the communication method of claim 1 .
