Abstract

A method of making superhydrophobic concrete includes creating a mixture, wherein the mixture comprises aragonite and/or graphene, and heating the mixture to a temperature between 500° C. and 2,500° C., then drying the mixture, and, optionally, adding the mixture to concrete.

Claims (18)

1 . A method of reducing rusting in steel or concrete, the method comprising:

combining and mixing aragonite and superhydrophobic graphene to form a mixture;

heating the mixture to a temperature between 500° C. and 2,500° C.;

drying the mixture;

making the mixture into a paste; and

applying the paste to the steel or the concrete.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising removing oxygen from the mixture before making the mixture into the paste.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the paste is formulated as a paint, resin, or filler.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein aragonite is present in the mixture a quantity less than the superhydrophobic graphene.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the method results in less quarry calcium carbonate in concrete than traditional concrete production.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the method results in less carbon dioxide emission than traditional concrete production.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the aragonite comprises modified aragonite particles formed from restructured oolitic aragonite that have an average diameter less than or equal to 10 μm.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the modified aragonite particles have an average particle diameter of between 100 nm and 10 μm.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the superhydrophobic graphene comprises few-layer graphene.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the superhydrophobic graphene comprises hydrophobic moieties covalently attached to the graphene.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the superhydrophobic graphene is in admixture with additional hydrophobic materials.

12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the paste is applied to steel, and wherein the steel is used to reinforce concrete.

13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the paste is applied to concrete.
