Abstract

Systems, methods, and devices are provided for an engine driven pump gearbox. A engine, such as a gas turbine engine, may drive a primary shaft having a gear. The gear may selectably engage with a gear of a secondary shaft that drives a machine (e.g., pump). By changing whether the gear of the primary shaft is engaged with the gear of the secondary shaft, the gearbox may be switched between an engaged and a neutral (or disengaged) configuration. A power takeoff device (e.g., a generator) may be connected to the primary shaft and may be operated in reverse as a motor to rotate, slow, stop, and/or reverse rotation of the primary shaft. Brakes may be associated with one or more of the primary and secondary shafts. The power takeoff device and one or more of the brakes may be controlled to shift the shafts between engaged and disengaged positions relative to each other.

Claims (157)

1 . An engine driven pump gearbox system comprising:

an engine;

a gearbox driven by the engine;

a primary shaft driven directly by the gearbox, the primary shaft having a first primary shaft gear;

a secondary shaft having a first secondary shaft gear;

a collar associated with the secondary shaft for selectively disengaging or engaging the primary shaft and the secondary shaft in at least one of multiple positions:

a first engaged position where the first primary shaft gear engages the first secondary shaft gear; and

a disengaged position, being a neutral position, where the primary shaft is disengaged from the secondary shaft; and

a primary shaft brake for braking a primary shaft rotation,

wherein the primary shaft brake is controlled as a clutch to shift engagement of the primary shaft and the secondary shaft between the first engaged position and disengaged position.

2 . An engine driven pump gearbox system comprising:

an engine;

a gearbox driven by the engine;

a primary shaft driven directly by the gearbox, the primary shaft having a first primary shaft gear;

a secondary shaft having a first secondary shaft gear;

a collar associated with the secondary shaft for selectively disengaging or engaging the primary shaft and the secondary shaft in at least one of multiple positions:

a first engaged position where the first primary shaft gear engages the first secondary shaft gear; and

a disengaged position, being a neutral position, where the primary shaft is disengaged from the secondary shaft; and

a power takeoff device for generating power when driven by the primary shaft,

wherein the power takeoff device is controlled as a clutch to shift engagement of the primary shaft and the secondary shaft between the first engaged position and disengaged position, and

wherein the power takeoff device is configured to run as a motor to control movement of the primary shaft.

3 . The engine driven pump gearbox system according to claim 1 , wherein the power takeoff device is a generator configured to generate electricity in a generator mode and configured to run as the motor to control movement of the primary shaft in a motor mode.

4 . An engine driven pump gearbox system comprising:

an engine;

a gearbox driven by the engine;

a primary shaft driven directly by the gearbox, the primary shaft having a first primary shaft gear;

a secondary shaft having a first secondary shaft gear;

a collar associated with the secondary shaft for selectively disengaging or engaging the primary shaft and the secondary shaft in at least one of multiple positions:

a first engaged position where the first primary shaft gear engages the first secondary shaft gear; and

a disengaged position, being a neutral position, where the primary shaft is disengaged from the secondary shaft; and

a shifter in mechanical connection with the collar to move the collar for selectively disengaging or engaging the primary shaft and the secondary shaft in the at least one of multiple positions.

5 . An engine driven pump gearbox system comprising:

an engine;

a gearbox driven by the engine;

a primary shaft driven directly by the gearbox, the primary shaft having a first primary shaft gear;

a secondary shaft having a first secondary shaft gear;

a collar associated with the secondary shaft for selectively disengaging or engaging the primary shaft and the secondary shaft in at least one of multiple positions:

a first engaged position where the first primary shaft gear engages the first secondary shaft gear; and

a disengaged position, being a neutral position, where the primary shaft is disengaged from the secondary shaft; and

a hydraulic fracing pump driven by the secondary shaft,

wherein there is no torque converter between the gearbox and the hydraulic fracing pump.

The engine driven pump gearbox system according to claim 1 , wherein an electronic controller selectably actuates a primary shaft brake control of the primary shaft brake to apply a braking force to the primary shaft in concert with the shifting of the primary shaft and the secondary shaft between the first engaged position and disengaged position.

7 . The engine driven pump gearbox system according to claim 6 , further comprising:

a sensor connected to an outlet of a pump driven by the secondary shaft and measuring a pressure of a fluid pumped by the pump,

wherein the electronic controller also selectably actuates a shifter to shift the primary shaft and the secondary shaft between the first engaged position and disengaged position in response to the pressure exceeding an upper or lower threshold.

8 . A switchable pump transmission assembly for an engine driven pump gearbox system, the switchable pump transmission assembly comprising:

a primary shaft configured to connect to a rotating motive source, the primary shaft having a first primary shaft gear;

a secondary shaft configured to connect to a load, the secondary shaft having a first secondary shaft gear;

a collar associated with the secondary shaft for selectively disengaging or engaging the primary shaft and the secondary shaft in at least one of multiple positions:

a first engaged position where the first primary shaft gear engages the first secondary shaft gear;

a disengaged position, being a neutral position, where the primary shaft is disengaged from the secondary shaft; and

a primary shaft brake for braking a primary shaft rotation; and

a secondary shaft brake for braking a secondary shaft rotation.

9 . A switchable pump transmission assembly for an engine driven pump gearbox system, the switchable pump transmission assembly comprising:

a primary shaft configured to connect to a rotating motive source, the primary shaft having a first primary shaft gear;

a secondary shaft configured to connect to a load, the secondary shaft having a first secondary shaft gear;

a collar associated with the secondary shaft for selectively disengaging or engaging the primary shaft and the secondary shaft in at least one of multiple positions:

a first engaged position where the first primary shaft gear engages the first secondary shaft gear;

a disengaged position, being a neutral position, where the primary shaft is disengaged from the secondary shaft; and

a primary shaft brake for braking a primary shaft rotation; and

a power takeoff device for generating power when driven by the primary shaft,

wherein the power takeoff device is configured to run as a motor to control movement of the primary shaft.

10 . A switchable pump transmission assembly for an engine driven pump gearbox system, the switchable pump transmission assembly comprising:

a primary shaft configured to connect to a rotating motive source, the primary shaft having a first primary shaft gear;

a secondary shaft configured to connect to a load, the secondary shaft having a first secondary shaft gear;

a collar associated with the secondary shaft for selectively disengaging or engaging the primary shaft and the secondary shaft in at least one of multiple positions:

a first engaged position where the first primary shaft gear engages the first secondary shaft gear;

a disengaged position, being a neutral position, where the primary shaft is disengaged from the secondary shaft; and

a primary shaft brake for braking a primary shaft rotation; and

a power takeoff device for generating power when driven by the primary shaft,

wherein the power takeoff device is a generator configured to generate electricity in a generator mode and configured to run as a motor to control movement of the primary shaft in a motor mode.

11 . A switchable pump transmission assembly for an engine driven pump gearbox system, the switchable pump transmission assembly comprising:

a primary shaft configured to connect to a rotating motive source, the primary shaft having a first primary shaft gear;

a secondary shaft configured to connect to a load, the secondary shaft having a first secondary shaft gear;

a collar associated with the secondary shaft for selectively disengaging or engaging the primary shaft and the secondary shaft in at least one of multiple positions:

a first engaged position where the first primary shaft gear engages the first secondary shaft gear;

a disengaged position, being a neutral position, where the primary shaft is disengaged from the secondary shaft; and

a primary shaft brake for braking a primary shaft rotation; and

a shifter in mechanical connection with the collar to move the collar for selectively disengaging or engaging the primary shaft and the secondary shaft in the multiple positions.

12 . A switchable pump transmission assembly for an engine driven pump gearbox system, the switchable pump transmission assembly comprising:

a primary shaft configured to connect to a rotating motive source, the primary shaft having a first primary shaft gear;

a secondary shaft configured to connect to a load, the secondary shaft having a first secondary shaft gear;

a collar associated with the secondary shaft for selectively disengaging or engaging the primary shaft and the secondary shaft in at least one of multiple positions:

a first engaged position where the first primary shaft gear engages the first secondary shaft gear;

a disengaged position, being a neutral position, where the primary shaft is disengaged from the secondary shaft; and

a primary shaft brake for braking a primary shaft rotation; and

a power takeoff device for generating power when driven by the primary shaft.

13 . A switchable pump transmission assembly for an engine driven pump gearbox system, the switchable pump transmission assembly comprising:

a primary shaft configured to connect to a rotating motive source, the primary shaft having a first primary shaft gear;

a secondary shaft configured to connect to a load, the secondary shaft having a first secondary shaft gear;

a collar associated with the secondary shaft for selectively disengaging or engaging the primary shaft and the secondary shaft in at least one of multiple positions:

a first engaged position where the first primary shaft gear engages the first secondary shaft gear;

a disengaged position, being a neutral position, where the primary shaft is disengaged from the secondary shaft; and

a primary shaft brake for braking a primary shaft rotation; and

an electronic controller connected to a power takeoff device and connected to a primary shaft brake control,

wherein the electronic controller selectably actuates the primary shaft brake control to apply a braking force to the primary shaft in concert with the shifting of the primary shaft and the secondary shaft between the first engaged position and disengaged position.

14 . The switchable pump transmission assembly according to claim 13 , further comprising:

a sensor connected to the electronic controller and configured to measure a pressure of a fluid pumped by a pump driven by the secondary shaft,

wherein the electronic controller also selectably actuates a shifter to shift the primary shaft and the secondary shaft between the first engaged position and disengaged position in response to the pressure exceeding an upper or lower threshold.

15 . A switchable pump transmission assembly for an engine driven pump gearbox system, the switchable pump transmission assembly comprising:

a primary shaft configured to connect to a rotating motive source, the primary shaft having a first primary shaft gear;

a secondary shaft configured to connect to a load, the secondary shaft having a first secondary shaft gear;

a collar associated with the secondary shaft for selectively disengaging or engaging the primary shaft and the secondary shaft in at least one of multiple positions:

a first engaged position where the first primary shaft gear engages the first secondary shaft gear;

a disengaged position, being a neutral position, where the primary shaft is disengaged from the secondary shaft; and

a primary shaft brake for braking a primary shaft rotation; and

a pump connected to the secondary shaft and driven by a rotation of the secondary shaft,

wherein the switchable pump transmission assembly does not include a torque converter.

16 . A switchable pump transmission assembly for an engine driven pump gearbox system, the switchable pump transmission assembly comprising:

a primary shaft configured to connect to a rotating motive source, the primary shaft having a first primary shaft gear;

a secondary shaft configured to connect to a load, the secondary shaft having a first secondary shaft gear;

a collar associated with the secondary shaft for selectively disengaging or engaging the primary shaft and the secondary shaft in at least one of multiple positions:

a first engaged position where the first primary shaft gear engages the first secondary shaft gear;

a disengaged position, being a neutral position, where the primary shaft is disengaged from the secondary shaft; and

a primary shaft brake for braking a primary shaft rotation,

wherein the switchable pump transmission assembly does not include a torque converter.

17 . A method of operating an engine driven pump gearbox system to selectably drive an input of a hydraulic fracing pump without utilization of a torque converter, the method comprising:

driving, by an engine, a primary shaft of the engine driven pump gearbox system to rotate,

wherein the primary shaft of the engine driven pump gearbox system has a first primary shaft gear attached to the primary shaft, the first primary shaft gear rotated thereby;

engaging a first secondary shaft gear of a secondary shaft with the first primary shaft gear of the primary shaft,

wherein the secondary shaft of the engine driven pump gearbox system has the first secondary shaft gear attached to the secondary shaft and rotated thereby;

driving, by the primary shaft, the secondary shaft in response to the engaging, the secondary shaft providing power to the input of the hydraulic fracing pump;

translating a collar attached to the secondary shaft, the translating axially shifting the secondary shaft from a first engaged position to a disengaged position; and

disengaging the first primary shaft gear from the first secondary shaft gear in response to the translating, whereby the primary shaft no longer drives the secondary shaft to rotate when the secondary shaft is in the disengaged position; and

rotating the secondary shaft while the secondary shaft is in the disengaged position by an electric motor to align the first primary shaft gear and the first secondary shaft gear for engaging.

18 . A switchable pump transmission assembly for an engine driven pump gearbox system, the switchable pump transmission assembly comprising:

a primary shaft configured to connect to a rotating motive source, the primary shaft having a first primary shaft gear;

a secondary shaft configured to connect to a load, the secondary shaft having a first secondary shaft gear;

a collar associated with the secondary shaft for selectively disengaging or engaging the primary shaft and the secondary shaft in at least one of multiple positions:

a first engaged position where the first primary shaft gear engages the first secondary shaft gear;

a disengaged position, being a neutral position, where the primary shaft is disengaged from the secondary shaft during an engine startup of the rotating motive source so that the rotating motive source and the primary shaft rotate while the secondary shaft and the load attached to the secondary shaft do not rotate.

19 . A method of operating an engine driven pump gearbox system to selectably drive an input of a hydraulic fracing pump without utilization of a torque converter, the method comprising:

driving, by an engine, a primary shaft of the engine driven pump gearbox system to rotate during a startup of the engine,

wherein the primary shaft of the engine driven pump gearbox system has a first primary shaft gear attached to the primary shaft, the first primary shaft gear rotated thereby during the startup of the engine;

disengaging a first secondary shaft gear of a secondary shaft with the first primary shaft gear of the primary shaft before or during the startup of the engine, wherein the secondary shaft of the engine driven pump gearbox system has the first secondary shaft gear attached to the secondary shaft and rotatable thereby;

not driving, by the primary shaft, the secondary shaft, the not driving being in response to the disengaging, the secondary shaft providing isolation of the input of the hydraulic fracing pump from the engine during the startup of the engine;

after the startup of the engine, translating a collar attached to the secondary shaft, the translating axially shifting the secondary shaft from a disengaged position to a first engaged position; and

engaging the first primary shaft gear from the first secondary shaft gear in response to the translating, whereby the primary shaft drives the secondary shaft to rotate and drive the hydraulic fracing pump when the secondary shaft is in the engaged position.

20 . An engine drive pump gearbox system for hydraulic fracturing comprising:

a rotating motive source comprising a gas turbine engine, the gas turbine engine including a compressor positioned to compress air, a compressor turbine connected to the compressor such that the compressor turbine and the compressor rotate a first rotational speed, and a power turbine positioned such that heated combustion gas causes the power turbine to rotate at a second rotational speed;

a transmission including:

a primary shaft connected to the power turbine such that the input shaft rotates at the second rotational speed, wherein the primary shaft has a first primary shaft gear;

a secondary shaft configured to connect to a load comprising a hydraulic fracturing pump, wherein the secondary shaft has a first secondary shaft gear;

a collar associated with the secondary shaft for selectively disengaging or engaging the primary shaft and the secondary shaft in at least one of multiple positions:

a first engaged position where the first primary shaft gear engages the first secondary shaft gear;

a disengaged position, being a neutral position, where the primary shaft is disengaged from the secondary shaft during an engine startup of the rotating motive source so that the rotating motive source and the primary shaft rotate at the second rotational speed, while the secondary shaft and the load attached to the secondary shaft do not rotate,

wherein no brake is applied to the primary shaft or the secondary shaft, or the power turbine, during the engine startup while the secondary shaft and the load attached to the secondary shaft do not rotate.

21 . An engine driven pump gearbox system comprising:

a gas turbine engine having a compressor section with a compressor shaft rotatable at a first speed and a power section with a power shaft rotatable at a second speed, wherein the power shaft is an output shaft of the engine;

a switchable pump transmission assembly driven by the output shaft of the engine at the second speed, the switchable pump transmission assembly comprising:

a primary shaft that is driven directly by the output shaft of the engine at the second speed;

a primary shaft gear on the primary shaft;

a secondary shaft;

a secondary shaft gear on the secondary shaft,

wherein the secondary shaft gear is selectably engageable with the primary shaft gear in the following positions:

(i) a first engaged position where the primary shaft gear engages the secondary shaft gear to drive the secondary shaft at a third speed different than the second speed; and

(ii) a disengaged position, being a neutral position, where the primary shaft is disengaged from the secondary shaft and the secondary shaft is driven at a fourth speed, the fourth speed being a null speed corresponding to disengagement of the secondary shaft in the neutral position.
