Abstract

Aspects of the disclosure provide systems and methods for providing suggested locations for pick up and destination locations. Pick up locations may include locations where an autonomous vehicle can pick up a passenger, while destination locations may include locations where the vehicle can wait for an additional passenger, stop and wait for a passenger to perform some task and return to the vehicle, or for the vehicle to drop off a passenger. As such, a request for a vehicle may be received from a client computing device. The request may identify a first location. A set of one or more suggested locations may be selected by comparing the predetermined locations to the first location. The set may be provided to the client computing device.

Claims (39)

1 . A method comprising:

displaying, by one or more processors, on a display of a client computing device associated with a user, a plurality of options, each option being associated with a respective suggested location to maneuver a vehicle operating in an autonomous mode;

receiving, by the one or more processors, a first user input identifying a particular one of the plurality of options selected by the user; and

sending, by the one or more processors, information identifying the respective suggested location associated with the particular one of the plurality of options to one or more server computing devices of a dispatching system in order to provide the vehicle with instructions to maneuver in the autonomous mode to the respective suggested location associated with the particular one of the plurality of options.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

sending, by the one or more processors, a request for the vehicle to the one or more server computing devices of the dispatching system, wherein the request identifies a first location.

3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

in response to the information identifying the respective suggested location, receiving, by the one or more processors, a plurality of suggested locations from the one or more server computing devices of the dispatching system.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the received plurality of suggested locations belong to a subset of a plurality of predetermined locations that are within a threshold distance of the first location and are selected based on scoring of the predetermined locations.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the respective suggested locations is within a service area of the vehicle.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the respective suggested locations corresponds to one of a home, a school, a supermarket, a gym or a workplace.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein a list of suggested locations are displayed on the display in response to the user selecting an option to display saved suggested locations or an option to display recent locations.

8 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

presenting, by the one or more processors, on the display of the client computing device associated with the user, a map.

9 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

receiving, by the one or more processors, a second user input identifying a location on the map corresponding to a pickup location or a destination location; and

sending, by the one or more processors, information identifying the location on the map to the one or more server computing devices of the dispatching system,

wherein the vehicle is controlled to maneuver to the location on the map.

10 . The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

displaying, by the one or more processors on the display, a map marker overlaying a portion of the map adjacent to the location on the map;

sending, by the one or more processors, information identifying the location on the map to the one or more server computing devices of the dispatching system;

receiving, by the one or more processors from the one or more server computing devices of the dispatching system, a notification including a suggested location corresponding to the location on the map; and

highlighting, by the one or more processors, the map marker to indicate that the location of the map marker is a suggested location.

11 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the second user input is generated in response to the user tapping on the map.

12 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the second user input is generated in response to the user entering an address.

13 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the second user input is generated in response to the user entering location information.

14 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the display presents an option to enter a search query for a location search.

15 . A client computing device comprising:

a display associated with a user;

one or more user input devices; and

one or more processors configured to:

display, on the display, a plurality of options, each option being associated with a respective suggested location to maneuver a vehicle operating in an autonomous mode;

receive a first user input identifying a particular one of the plurality of options selected by the user; and

send information identifying the respective suggested location associated with the particular one of the plurality of options to one or more server computing devices of a dispatching system in order to provide the vehicle with instructions to maneuver in the autonomous mode to the respective suggested location associated with the particular one of the plurality of options.

16 . The client computing device of claim 15 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to send a request for the vehicle to the one or more server computing devices of the dispatching system, wherein the request identifies a first location.

17 . The client computing device of claim 15 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to, in response to the information identifying the respective suggested location, receive a plurality of suggested locations s from the one or more server computing devices of the dispatching system.

18 . The client computing device of claim 17 , wherein the received plurality of suggested locations belong to a subset of a plurality of predetermined locations that are within a threshold distance of the first location and are selected based on scoring of the predetermined locations.

19 . The client computing device of claim 15 , wherein at least one of the respective suggested locations is within a service area of the vehicle.

20 . The client computing device of claim 15 , wherein at least one of the respective suggested locations corresponds to one of a home, a school, a supermarket, a gym or a workplace.
