Shared device firmware update
The disclosure relates generally to firmware updates for conference room devices. When there is a firmware problem for a conference room device that needs fixing, it may result in the conference room sitting unused until an end user submits a ticket to information technology (IT). The present disclosure proposes a more proactive approach. For instance, a user may bring a laptop to a conference room for a meeting that uses a meeting application. The laptop may detect the presence of peripherals in the conference room and, in response, iterate through the different peripherals and discover current firmware version and health status for the peripherals. The laptop may then report to an IT server, for each peripheral, 1) peripheral identifier, 2) firmware version, 3) health status, 4) meeting room location. The IT server may then determine if any firmware fixes should be applied.
1 . An Information Handling System (IHS), comprising:
one or more processors; and
a memory coupled to the one or more processors, wherein the memory comprises computer-readable instructions, that upon execution by the one or more processors cause the IHS to:
analyze information regarding a plurality of conference rooms under management by a cloud-based management service, including identifying a first conference room having a plurality of peripheral devices, wherein a first peripheral device of the plurality of peripheral devices is identified as having a malfunction by the information regarding the plurality of conference rooms, and wherein the first peripheral device is not configured for network communication;
search a plurality of conference room bookings to determine an identity of a user who has booked the first conference room;
ask the user for permission to move forward with a remediation operation, directed to the malfunction, for the first peripheral device; and
upon receiving permission from the user, coordinate with the user to apply a remediation package to the first peripheral device to remediate the malfunction, wherein
applying the remediation package to the first peripheral device employs a physical presence of a user device, associated with the user, in the conference room.
2 . The IHS of claim 1 , wherein the remediation package includes instructions to apply a firmware update to the first peripheral device.
3 . The IHS of claim 1 , wherein the remediation package includes an update patch or firmware update code and instructions to apply the update patch or firmware update code.
4 . The IHS of claim 1 , wherein the remediation package includes instructions for the user to acquire an update patch or firmware update code using a web browser.
5 . The IHS of claim 1 , further comprising computer-readable instructions to cause the IHS to:
pre-authorize the user to apply the remediation package to the first peripheral device.
6 . The IHS of claim 5 , wherein the computer-readable instructions to cause the IHS to pre-authorize the user include computer-readable instructions to cause the IHS to:
send a one-time password to the user via out of band communication.
7 . A non-transitory computer-readable storage device having instructions stored thereon for peripheral device remediation, wherein execution of the instructions by one or more processors of an IHS (Information Handling System) causes the one or more processors to:
analyze information regarding a plurality of conference rooms under management by a cloud-based management service, including identifying a first conference room having a plurality of peripheral devices, wherein a first peripheral device of the plurality of peripheral devices is identified as having a malfunction in the information regarding the plurality of conference rooms, and wherein the first peripheral device is not configured for network communication;
search a plurality of conference room bookings to determine an identity of a user who has booked the first conference room;
ask the user for permission to move forward with a remediation operation, directed to the malfunction, for the first peripheral device; and
upon receiving permission from the user, coordinate with the user to apply a remediation package to the first peripheral device to remediate the malfunction, wherein
applying the remediation package to the first peripheral device employs a physical presence of a user device, associated with the user, in the conference room.
8 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage device of claim 7 , further comprising instructions to cause the one or more processors to:
gather the information regarding the plurality of conference rooms from a plurality of user devices.
9 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage device of claim 7 , wherein the remediation package includes instructions to apply a firmware update to the first peripheral device.
