Abstract

Signatures extracted from API calls made from a remote control application are used to update a relational database in which is stored installed device information for a real-world, home network system of a user. The installed device information is then used to create a virtual-world, home network system of the user. Data obtained from an activity of an avatar of the user that result in a change in a configuration of the virtual-world, home network system functions to identify an advertisement that is to be provided to the user.

Claims (12)

1 . A method for providing advertising, comprising:

extracting, by a monitoring application, signatures from application programming interface (API) calls sent from a remote control application resident on at least one controlling device within a real-world home network system of a user to an external, remote control configuration application that provides to the remote control application data for configuring the remote control application;

using the signatures extracted from the API calls to update a relational database in which is stored installed device information for the real-world home network system of the user, the installed device information being cross-referenced to an identifier for the at least one controlling device and indicating a configuration of the real-world home network system of the user;

using the installed device information for the real-world, home network system of the user stored in the relational database to create a virtual-world, home network system of the user;

using data obtained from a one or more activities of an avatar of the user with the virtual-world, home network system of the user that results in a change in a configuration of the virtual-world, home network system of the user to identify an advertisement to provide to the user; and

causing the advertisement to be provided to the user within the virtual-world and/or the real-world.

2 . A non-transitory, computer readable media having stored thereon instructions executable by a processor to cause a device to perform steps for providing advertising, the steps comprising:

extracting signatures from application programming interface (API) calls sent from a remote control application resident on at least one controlling device within a real-world home network system of a user to an external, remote control configuration application that provides to the remote control application data for configuring the remote control application;

using the signatures extracted from the API calls to update a relational database in which is stored installed device information for the real-world home network system of the user, the installed device information being cross-referenced to an identifier for the at least one controlling device and indicating a configuration of the real-world home network system of the user;

using the installed device information for the real-world, home network system of the user stored in the relational database to create a virtual-world, home network system of the user;

using data obtained from a one or more activities of an avatar of the user with the virtual-world, home network system of the user that results in a change in a configuration of the virtual-world, home network system of the user to identify an advertisement to provide to the user; and

causing the advertisement to be provided to the user within the virtual-world and/or the real-world.
