Method for exchanging heat with a battery using fluorinated compounds having a low GWP
The present invention relates to a method for exchanging heat with a battery comprising the use of a heat transfer fluid, which comprises one or more chemical compounds having the general formula: Ph(OR f ) x (I) wherein Ph is an aromatic ring linked to one or more ether groups —OR f where each —R f : —is a monovalent fluorinated alkyl group comprising at least one C—F bond, —has a carbon chain, preferably a C 1 -C 10 carbon chain, which can be linear or can comprise branches and/or cycles, and, optionally, can comprise in chain heteroatoms selected from O, N or S, and wherein, when X>1, the —R f groups on the same molecule can be equal to or different from each other.
1 . A method comprising exchanging heat between a battery and a heat transfer fluid, said heat transfer fluid comprising more than 30 wt % of one or more chemical compounds selected from:
1,4-bis(1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethoxy)benzene,
1,4-bis(2-trifluoromethyl-1,1,2-trifluoroethoxy)benzene,
1,3-bis(1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethoxy)benzene,
1,3-bis(2-trifluoromethyl-1,1,2-trifluoroethoxy)benzene,
1,2-bis(1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethoxy)benzene,
1,2-bis(2-trifluoromethyl-1,1,2-trifluoroethoxy)benzene,
1,2-bis(2-trifluoromethoxy-1,1,2-trifluoroethoxy)benzene,
1,3-bis(2-trifluoromethoxy-1,1,2-trifluoroethoxy)benzene,
1,4-bis(2-trifluoromethoxy-1,1,2-trifluoroethoxy)benzene,
and mixtures thereof,
wherein said heat transfer fluid has a GWP 100 of less than 30.
2 . The method according to claim 1 wherein said battery is a vehicle battery.
3 . The method according to claim 1 wherein said battery is a rechargeable battery.
4 . The method according to claim 3 wherein said battery is a lithium-ion battery.
5 . The method according to claim 1 wherein said one or more chemical compounds make up at least 50% by weight of said heat transfer fluid.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the heat transfer fluid is a dielectric heat transfer fluid within a closed system which is in thermal contact with the battery to indirectly exchange heat or the dielectric heat transfer fluid exchanges heat directly with the battery.
7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the dielectric heat transfer fluid is characterized by improved dielectric strength and volume resistivity when compared to heat transfer fluids that do not comprise the one or more compounds.
8 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the dielectric heat transfer fluid is essentially free of CFCs and fluoroalkanes.
9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the heat transfer fluid exists in a liquid state at temperatures ranging from −100 to 200 deg C.
10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein exchanging heat between the battery and the heat transfer fluid comprises circulating the heat transfer fluid via pump within a closed system in thermal contact with the battery and a second system.
11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the second system is a heat exchanger.
12 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the second system comprises a heating system and/or a refrigeration system.
13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the heat transfer fluid has a Prandtl number between 3 and 100 at 40° C. and 1 atm (101325 Pa) pressure.
14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the heat transfer fluid has a Prandtl number between 30 and 80 at 40° C. and 1 atm pressure.
15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the heat transfer fluid has a Prandtl number between 40 and 70 at 40° C. and 1 atm pressure.
