Abstract

Devices in a building may be identified using a combination of power monitoring and network monitoring. Power monitoring may be performed by obtaining a power monitoring signal and processing the power monitoring signal with models to determine information about one or more devices in the building. Network monitoring may be performed by receiving network packets transmitted by devices in the building and processing the data of the network packets to determine information about one or more devices in the building. For some devices and some implementations, information about a device may be determined by using both power monitoring and network monitoring.

Claims (49)

1 . A computer-implemented method for identifying devices, the computer-implemented method comprising:

obtaining a power monitoring signal by measuring an electrical property of a power line;

processing a first power event in the power monitoring signal with one or more power models to generate one or more scores;

determining first information about a first device powered by the power line using the one or more scores;

receiving a network packet via a network device, wherein the network packet corresponds to a network transmission by a second device powered by the power line; and

determining, using data of the network packet and the first information, second information about the second device.

2 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the network packet is received from a car charger, and the second device is a car.

3 . The computer-implemented method of claim 2 , wherein the second information about the second device comprises an amount of power being consumed by the second device.

4 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the network device is a hub, and wherein the hub has a network connection with the second device.

5 . The computer-implemented method of claim 4 , comprising:

transmitting a request for information to the second device;

wherein receiving the network packet comprises receiving a response to the request for information.

6 . The computer-implemented method of claim 5 , wherein transmitting the request for information comprises at least one of polling the second device, requesting information using an API of the second device, or requesting information about services provided by the second device.

7 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the network packet is received from a third device.

8 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the network transmission corresponds to a state of the second device.

9 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the network transmission corresponds to a service provided by the second device.

10 . An electrical meter comprising:

a sensor for measuring an electrical property of an electrical main;

a network interface; and

at least one processor configured to:

obtain a power monitoring signal from the sensor;

process a first power event in the power monitoring signal with one or more power models to generate one or more scores;

determine first information about a first device powered by the electrical main using the one or more scores;

receive a first network packet via a network device, wherein the first network packet corresponds to a network transmission by a second device powered by the electrical main; and

determine, using data of the first network packet and the first information, second information about the second device.

11 . The electrical meter of claim 10 , wherein the network device is a hub, and wherein the hub has a network connection with the second device.

12 . The electrical meter of claim 11 , wherein the at least one processor is configured to receive the first network packet using an API of the hub.

13 . The electrical meter of claim 11 , wherein the hub controls the second device.

14 . The electrical meter of claim 10 , wherein the at least one processor is configured to receive the first network packet via a mesh network.

15 . The electrical meter of claim 10 , wherein the at least one processor is configured to:

receive a second network packet via a second computer network; and

receive the first network packet via a first computer network.

16 . The electrical meter of claim 15 , wherein the first computer network is a Wi-Fi network and the second computer network is a Bluetooth network.

17 . An electrical panel comprising:

a sensor for measuring an electrical property of an electrical main;

a network interface; and

at least one processor configured to:

obtain a power monitoring signal from the sensor;

process a first power event in the power monitoring signal with one or more power models to generate one or more scores;

determine first information about a first device powered by the electrical main using the one or more scores;

receive a first network packet via a network device, wherein the first network packet corresponds to a network transmission by a second device powered by the electrical main; and

determine, using data of the first network packet and the first information, second information about the second device.

18 . The electrical panel of claim 17 , wherein the at least one processor is configured to:

receive a second network packet via a second computer network; and

receive the first network packet via a first computer network.

19 . The electrical panel of claim 17 , wherein the network device is a hub, and wherein the hub has a network connection with the second device.

20 . The electrical panel of claim 19 , wherein the first network packet is a broadcast network packet.

21 . The electrical panel of claim 17 , wherein the second information about the second device comprises information about a state of the second device.

22 . The electrical panel of claim 17 , wherein the second information about the second device comprises an amount of power being consumed by the second device.
