Abstract

The present invention relates to a device and method for adaptively controlling power consumption in a communication node. The communication node includes a plurality of hardware units, including a modem and at least two transceiver branches, wherein each hardware unit may be powered on/off during operation of the communication node. The communication node is configured to determine current traffic requirements and to estimate future traffic requirements and then adapt the power consumption level by powering on/off the hardware units with regard to current traffic requirements and estimated future traffic requirements.

Claims (30)

1 . A communication node for adaptively controlling power consumption, the communication node comprising:

a plurality of hardware units, including a modem unit and at least two transceiver front-end units wherein, each of the hardware units being associated with a power consumption level, a data throughput and a wake-up time;

a processing unit configured to determine current traffic requirements and to estimate future traffic requirements based on at least one of current traffic requirements, historical data, weather information and network information; and

a power control unit configured to adapt the power consumption level of the communication node by powering on/off the hardware units with regard to current traffic requirements and estimated future traffic requirements.

2 . The communication node of claim 1 , wherein powering on/off is performed such that the data throughput:

is higher than current traffic requirements; and

allows adapting to estimated future traffic requirements with regard to the wake-up times of the hardware units.

3 . The communication node of claim 1 , wherein powering on/off are performed such that the data throughput is higher than the maximum of current traffic requirements and estimated future traffic requirements.

4 . The communication node of claim 1 , wherein the power control unit is configured to power on/off the hardware units in a predefined order.

5 . The communication node of claim 1 , wherein the processing unit is further configured to estimate future traffic requirements comprising a near-term traffic requirement and a longer-term traffic requirement.

6 . The communication node of claim 1 , wherein the processing unit is configured to determine current traffic requirements and to estimate future traffic requirements that both comprise upstream requirements and downstream requirements.

7 . The communication node of claim 6 , wherein the power control unit is configured to power on/off the transmitter and receiver of a transceiver unit independently with regard to asymmetry in the upstream and downstream requirements.

8 . A method in a communication node for adaptively controlling power consumption, the communication node comprising a plurality of hardware units, including a modem unit and at least two transceiver front-end units, each of the hardware units being associated with a power consumption level, a data throughput and a wake-up time, the method comprising the steps of:

determining current traffic requirements;

estimating future traffic requirements based on at least one of current traffic requirements, historical data, weather information and network information; and

adapting the power consumption level of the communication node by powering on/off the hardware units with regard to current traffic requirements and estimated future traffic requirements.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the step of adapting comprises powering on/off the hardware units such that the data throughput:

is higher than current traffic requirements, and

allows adapting to estimated future traffic requirements with regard to the wake-up times of the hardware units.

10 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the step of adapting comprises powering on/off the hardware units such that the data throughput is higher than the maximum of current traffic requirements and estimated future traffic requirements.

11 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the step of adapting comprises powering on/off the hardware units in a predefined order.

12 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the step of estimating future traffic requirements comprises estimating a near-term traffic requirement and a longer-term traffic requirement.

13 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the step of determining current traffic requirements further comprises determining upstream traffic requirements and downstream traffic requirements and the step of estimating future traffic requirements further comprises estimating future upstream traffic requirements and future downstream traffic requirements.

14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the step of adapting further comprises powering on/off the transmitter and the receiver of a transceiver unit independently with regard to upstream and downstream requirements.

15 . The communication node of claim 2 , wherein the power control unit is configured to power on/off the hardware units in a predefined order.

16 . The communication node of claim 2 , wherein the processing unit is further configured to estimate future traffic requirements comprising a near-term traffic requirement and a longer-term traffic requirement.

17 . The communication node of claim 2 , wherein the processing unit is configured to determine current traffic requirements and to estimate future traffic requirements that both comprise upstream requirements and downstream requirements.

18 . The communication node of claim 3 , wherein the power control unit is configured to power on/off the hardware units in a predefined order.

19 . The communication node of claim 3 , wherein the processing unit is further configured to estimate future traffic requirements comprising a near-term traffic requirement and a longer-term traffic requirement.

20 . The communication node of claim 3 , wherein the processing unit is configured to determine current traffic requirements and to estimate future traffic requirements that both comprise upstream requirements and downstream requirements.
