Abstract

A display is provided. The display includes gate driver circuitry, and a display panel including a first layer including a black matrix (BM) that defines first light transmittance portions and second light transmittance portions, wherein the first light transmittance portions and the second transmittance portions alternate with each other, and wherein each of the second light transmittance portions includes third light transmittance portions, smaller than the first light transmittance portions, and a second layer, disposed below the first layer, including light emitting diodes (LEDs), the LEDs including first groups of LEDs that are respectively disposed below the first light transmittance portions, and second groups of LEDs, wherein each of the second groups of LEDs includes LEDs respectively disposed below the third light transmittance portions included in each of the second light transmittance portions, wherein sub-pixels, respectively including the LEDs included in each of the second groups of LEDs, include a first sub-pixel electrically connected to the gate driver circuitry through a scan line, and second sub-pixels electrically connected to the gate driver circuitry through another scan line positioned alongside the scan line electrically connected to the first sub-pixel.

Claims (86)

1 . A display comprising:

gate driver circuitry; and

a display panel including:

a first layer including a black matrix (BM) that defines first light transmittance portions and second light transmittance portions, wherein the first light transmittance portions and the second transmittance portions alternate with each other, and wherein each of the second light transmittance portions includes third light transmittance portions, smaller than the first light transmittance portions, and

a second layer, disposed below the first layer, including light emitting diodes (LEDs), the LEDs including:

first groups of LEDs that are respectively disposed below the first light transmittance portions, and

second groups of LEDs, wherein each of the second groups of LEDs includes LEDs respectively disposed below the third light transmittance portions included in each of the second light transmittance portions,

wherein sub-pixels, respectively including the LEDs included in each of the second groups of LEDs, include:

a first sub-pixel electrically connected to the gate driver circuitry through a scan line, and

second sub-pixels electrically connected to the gate driver circuitry through another scan line positioned alongside the scan line electrically connected to the first sub-pixel.

2 . The display of claim 1 , wherein sub-pixels, respectively including LEDs included in each of the first groups of LEDs, include:

a third sub-pixel electrically connected to the gate driver circuitry through a scan line; and

fourth sub-pixels electrically connected to the gate driver circuitry through another scan line positioned alongside the scan line electrically connected to the third sub-pixel.

3 . The display of claim 2 ,

wherein a scan line electrically connected to the first sub-pixel is further electrically connected to the fourth sub-pixels, and

wherein a scan line electrically connected to the third sub-pixel is further electrically connected to the second sub-pixels.

4 . The display of claim 3 ,

wherein the number of the sub-pixels respectively including the LEDs included in each of the first groups of LEDs is 4,

wherein the number of the sub-pixels respectively including the LEDs included in each of the second groups of LEDs is 4,

wherein the number of the second sub-pixels is 3, and

wherein the number of the fourth sub-pixels is 3.

5 . The display of claim 3 , further comprising:

source driver circuitry; and

display driver integrated circuitry (DDIC) configured to provide a privacy display mode by disabling to emit light from the LEDs included in each of the first groups of LEDs,

wherein disabling to emit light from the LEDs included in each of the first groups of LEDs is performed based on:

controlling the source driver circuitry to provide a data voltage corresponding to a black color to the fourth sub-pixels before controlling the gate driver circuitry to perform a scan through a scan line electrically connected to the first sub-pixel and the fourth sub-pixels, and

controlling the source driver circuitry to provide the data voltage to the third sub-pixel before controlling the gate driver circuitry to perform a scan through a scan line electrically connected to the second sub-pixels and the third sub-pixel.

6 . The display of claim 3 , further comprising:

emission driver circuitry; and

display driver integrated circuitry (DDIC) configured to provide a privacy display mode by disabling to emit light from the LEDs included in each of the first groups of LEDs,

wherein disabling to emit light from the LEDs included in each of the first groups of LEDs is performed based on:

controlling the emission driver circuitry to bypass providing an emission signal to the fourth sub-pixels after controlling the gate driver circuitry to perform a scan through a scan line electrically connected to the first sub-pixel and the fourth sub-pixels, and

controlling the emission driver circuitry to bypass providing an emission signal to the third sub-pixel after controlling the gate driver circuitry to perform a scan through a scan line electrically connected to the second sub-pixels and the third sub-pixel.

7 . The display of claim 3 ,

wherein the first sub-pixel includes an LED configured to emit light of a first color,

wherein the second sub-pixels respectively include:

an LED configured to emit light of a second color,

an LED configured to emit light of the second color, and

an LED configured to emit light of a third color,

wherein the third sub-pixel includes an LED configured to emit light of the first color, and

wherein the fourth sub-pixels include:

an LED configured to emit light of the second color,

an LED configured to emit light of the second color, and

an LED configured to emit light of the third color.

8 . The display of claim 3 ,

wherein the first sub-pixel includes an LED configured to emit light of a second color,

wherein the second sub-pixels respectively include:

an LED configured to emit light of a first color,

an LED configured to emit light of the second color, and

an LED configured to emit light of a third color,

wherein the third sub-pixel includes an LED configured to emit light of the second color, and

wherein the fourth sub-pixels include:

an LED configured to emit light of the first color,

an LED configured to emit light of the second color, and

an LED configured to emit light of the third color.

9 . The display of claim 3 , wherein a center of one of the first light transmittance portions substantially corresponds to a center of a polygon defined by connecting centers of some of the second light transmittance portions surrounding the one of the first light transmittance portions.

10 . The display of claim 9 , wherein a center of one of the second light transmittance portions substantially corresponds to a center of a polygon defined by connecting centers of some of the first light transmittance portions surrounding the one of the second light transmittance portions.

11 . The display of claim 10 , wherein the polygon comprises a rhombus or a square.

12 . The display of claim 3 , wherein a center of one of the first groups of LEDs substantially corresponds to a center of a polygon defined by connecting centers of some of the second groups of LEDs surrounding the one of the first groups of LEDs.

13 . The display of claim 12 , wherein the center of the one of the first groups of LEDs substantially corresponds to a center of a polygon defined by connecting centers of LEDs included in the one of the first groups of LEDs.

14 . The display of claim 12 , wherein a center of one of the second groups of LEDs substantially corresponds to a center of a polygon defined by connecting centers of some of the first groups of LEDs surrounding the one of the second groups of LEDs.

15 . The display of claim 12 , wherein the polygon comprises a rhombus or a square.

16 . The display of claim 1 ,

wherein light, transmitted from LEDs included in the first groups of LEDs through the first light transmittance portions, has a first viewing angle, and

wherein light, transmitted from the LEDs included in the second groups of LEDs through the third light transmittance portions, has a second viewing angle narrower than the first viewing angle.

17 . An electronic device comprising:

gate driver circuitry; and

a display panel including:

a first layer including a black matrix (BM) that defines first light transmittance portions and second light transmittance portions, wherein the first light transmittance portions and the second light transmittance portions alternate with each other, and wherein each of the second light transmittance portions includes third light transmittance portions, smaller than the first light transmittance portions, and

a second layer, disposed below the first layer, including light emitting diodes (LEDs), the LEDs including:

first groups of LEDs that are respectively disposed below the first light transmittance portions, and

second groups of LEDs, wherein each of the second groups of LEDs includes LEDs respectively disposed below the third light transmittance portions included in each of the second light transmittance portions,

wherein sub-pixels, respectively including the LEDs included in each of the second groups of LEDs, include:

a first sub-pixel electrically connected to the gate driver circuitry through a scan line, and

second sub-pixels electrically connected to the gate driver circuitry through another scan line positioned alongside the scan line electrically connected to the first sub-pixel.

18 . The electronic device of claim 17 , wherein sub-pixels, respectively including LEDs included in each of the first groups of LEDs, include:

a third sub-pixel electrically connected to the gate driver circuitry through a scan line; and

fourth sub-pixels electrically connected to the gate driver circuitry through another scan line positioned alongside the scan line electrically connected to the third sub-pixel.

19 . The electronic device of claim 18 ,

wherein a scan line electrically connected to the first sub-pixel is further electrically connected to the fourth sub-pixels, and

wherein a scan line electrically connected to the third sub-pixel is further electrically connected to the second sub-pixels.

20 . The electronic device of claim 19 ,

wherein the number of the sub-pixels respectively including the LEDs included in each of the first groups of LEDs is 4,

wherein the number of the sub-pixels respectively including the LEDs included in each of the second groups of LEDs is 4,

wherein the number of the second sub-pixels is 3, and

wherein the number of the fourth sub-pixels is 3.
