Abstract

A substrate for an electrooptic device comprising a light-transmissive base member, a reflection layer formed on the base member so as to include each reflection portion and a corresponding transmission portion having a transmission factor higher than that of the reflection portion, a light transmission layer formed over the base member so as to coincide with the reflection layer and to include each hollow at a position that coincides with the transmission portion in plane, and an orientation film formed over the base member so as to coincide with the light transmission layer and to define a concavity while entering the corresponding hollow. The thickness “b” of a liquid crystal layer corresponding to the concavity is greater than the thickness “a” of the liquid crystal layer at the other positions thereof.

Claims (32)

1. An electro-optical device comprising:

a first substrate;

a second substrate;

a liquid crystal layer disposed between the first and second substrates;

a display dot including therein a transmission portion and a reflection portion;

a reflection layer disposed between the first substrate and the liquid crystal layer, the reflection layer including the reflection portion of the display dot;

an underlayer disposed between the liquid crystal layer and the reflection layer, the underlayer including a main portion corresponding to the reflection portion of the display dot and a relatively thin portion corresponding to the transmission portion of the display dot so that the liquid crystal layer has a greater thickness at the transmission portion than at the reflection portion; and

a protection layer disposed between the liquid crystal layer and second substrate, the protection layer including a main portion corresponding to the reflection portion of the display dot and a relatively thin portion corresponding to the transmission portion of the display dot so that the liquid crystal layer has a greater thickness at the transmission portion than at the reflection portion.

2. An electro-optical device comprising:

a first substrate;

a second substrate;

a liquid crystal layer disposed between the first and second substrates;

a display dot including therein a transmission portion and a reflection portion;

an underlayer disposed between the first substrate and the liquid crystal layer, the underlayer including a main portion corresponding to the reflection portion of the display dot and a relatively thin portion corresponding to the transmission portion of the display dot so that the liquid crystal layer has a greater thickness at the transmission portion than at the reflection portion;

a reflection layer disposed between the liquid crystal layer and the underlayer, the reflection layer including the reflection portion of the display dot; and

a protection layer disposed between the liquid crystal layer and second substrate, the protection layer including a main portion corresponding to the reflection portion of the display dot and a relatively thin portion corresponding to the transmission portion of the display dot so that the liquid crystal layer has a greater thickness at the transmission portion than at the reflection portion.

3. An electro-optical device comprising:

a first substrate;

a second substrate;

a liquid crystal layer disposed between the first and second substrates;

a display dot including therein a transmission portion and a reflection portion;

a reflection layer including the reflection portion of the display dot;

a light transmission layer that overlaps the reflection layer and not the overlapping transmission portion, the light transmission layer causing the liquid crystal layer to have a greater thickness at the transmission portion than at the reflection portion; and

a light shield film following and overlapping an edge of the reflection layer.

4. An electro-optical device comprising:

a first substrate;

a second substrate;

a liquid crystal layer disposed between the first and second substrates;

a sealing member that encloses the liquid crystal layer;

a display dot disposed inboard of the sealing member and including therein a transmission portion and a reflection portion;

a reflection layer including the reflection portion of the display dot; and

a light transmission layer that overlaps the reflection layer and not overlapping the transmission portion, the light transmission layer causing the liquid crystal layer to have a greater thickness at the transmission portion than at the reflection portion, the light transmission layer being separated from the sealing member by a space and not contacting the sealing member.
