Medical constructs of twisted lengths of collagen fibers and methods of making same
View Patent ↗Medical constructs that have a plurality of NDGA-treated collagen fibers twisted together to provide strands that are twisted together into implantable cords. The cords are suitable to treat orthopaedic and other conditions and can be degradeable over time. Related and methods of twisting the collagen fibers as groups or bundles of fibers to form the medical constructs are described.
1. A medical construct, comprising:
three biocompatible cables twisted together,
wherein each biocompatible cable comprises three strands twisted together about 200-300 twists per fiber meter in a first rotative direction, and
wherein each strand comprises twenty NDGA-treated elongate collagen fibers twisted together a number of twists per fiber meter in a second rotative direction opposite the first rotative direction.
2. A medical construct, comprising:
at least one biocompatible cable comprising a plurality of strands twisted together a number of twists per fiber meter in a first rotative direction,
wherein each strand comprises a plurality of NDGA-treated elongate collagen fibers twisted together a number of twists per fiber meter in a second rotative direction opposite the first rotative direction, said number of twists per fiber meter in the second rotative direction being substantially the same in each of the strands, and
wherein said construct comprises between about 2000-4000 NDGA-treated elongate collagen fibers.
