Abstract

The invention involves prophylaxis or treatment of nervous system pathological conditions. This is accomplished by administering secretable glial growth factors, such as the molecule referred to as GGF-2.

Claims (10)

1. A method for treating a subject suffering from a nervous system pathophysiological condition caused by demyelination, said method comprising administering to said subject an effective amount of a glial growth factor protein, said protein comprising an EGF-like domain selected from the group consisting of the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 237 or the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 238.

2. A method for treating a subject suffering from a nervous system pathophysiological condition caused by demyelination, said method comprising administering to said subject an effective amount of a glial growth factor protein, said protein comprising the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 230 or comprising the amino acid sequence of SEQ ID NO: 231.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said nervous system pathophysiological condition involves glia of the central nervous system.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said nervous system pathophysiological condition is selected from the group consisting of:

(1) demyelination of Schwann cells; and

(2) damage to Schwann cells.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein said nervous system pathophysiological condition involves glia of the central nervous system.

6. The method of claim 2 , wherein said nervous system pathophysiological condition is selected from the group consisting of:

(1) demyelination of Schwann cells; and

(2) damage to Schwann cells.
