Abstract

A video decoder system operates in different configurations to request and acquire information using one or more communication links and different communication protocols. A method for acquiring information requested by a User via a program guide selection involves retrieving access data from memory. The access data is retrieved in response to a User selection made from options shown on a displayed program guide. A data identifier is derived from program map data associating the data identifier and the User selection. Information is identified in an input signal in response to the access data using the identifier. The identified information is retrieved from the input signal to produce a retrieved information output and the retrieved information is formatted for display. The decoder may establish a Request communication link with a first device using the access data. In addition, the decoder may establish a communication link with another device using a communication protocol derived from an information database.

Claims (17)

1. A method for processing a high definition video signal, comprising the steps of:

separating said video signal which is a broadcasted television signal into at least two components, said first component is representative of television program video data and said second component is JAVA based computer code data, wherein

said separation step is performed by using a program map that identifies a first data identifier associated with said television program and a second data identifier associated with said computer code; and said JAVA based computer code data corresponds with said television program data;

decoding said television program video data;

processing said JAVA based computer code into image data capable of being displayed; and

formatting said decoded television program video data and said JAVA based computer code into a composite video image wherein the proportion of said video image contributed JAVA based computer code is rendered in response to an instruction.

2. Method according to claim 1 , including the step of

determining whether a User is authorized to access said television video image data and wherein

said step of decoding said first image representative data occurs in response to said authorization.

3. Method according to claim 2 , including the step of

decrypting said television video image data in response to said User authorization.

4. A method according to claim 1 , including the steps of

receiving program guide information and

receiving web page information for display, said received web page information being selected from said received program guide information.

5. A method according to claim 1 , including the step of

varying said proportion of said video image contributed by said JAVA computer code wherein said proportion is a percentage capable of being selected from any integer value between 0 and 100.

6. A method according to claim 1 , wherein said JAVA based computer code is capable of being rendered as part of a web page.
