Abstract

A number of items of data from a data source ( 12 ) can be processed and then deposited in at least one data destination ( 16, 17 ). The data may be image data, text data, numeric data or some other type of data, or a combination of these types of data. The processing of data is controlled by a project definition ( 14, 71, 101 ), which includes a plurality of modules selected from a variety of available modules (Tables 1-4). The modules have input and output ports which are interrelated by binding information. One of the modules, when executed, transmits a predetermined message, for example in the form of an electronic mail message.

Claims (47)

1. A method, comprising the steps of:

providing a set of predetermined function definitions which are different, at least one of said predetermined function definitions defining a function for editing image data;

storing a project definition that is operable when executed to edit said image data and which includes:

a plurality of function portions which each correspond to one of said function definitions in said set, and which each define at least one input port and at least one output port that are functionally related according to the corresponding function definition, at least one of said plurality of function portions comprising a user-defined custom definition function portion associated with said project definition;

a further portion which includes a source portion identifying a data source and defining an output port through which said image data from the data source can be produced, and which includes a destination portion identifying a data destination and defining an input port through which said image data can be supplied to the data destination; and binding information which includes binding portions that each associate a respective said input port with one of said output ports;

executing said project definition; and

automatically transmitting a communication to a remote device through a communication link after editing said image data during execution of said project definition, wherein transmitting said communication occurs after editing a predetermined number of images.

2. A method according to claim 1 , including the step of carrying out said transmitting step as said executing step is completing.

3. A method according to claim 1 , including the step of formatting said communication as an electronic mail message.

4. A method according to claim 1 , including the step of configuring said communications link to include a network.

5. A method according to claim 4 , including the step of configuring said network to include a portion of the Internet.

6. A method according to claim 1 , wherein said transmitting step includes the step of causing one of said function portions to send the communication.

7. A method according to claim 1 , wherein said communication identifies an occurrence of a predefined condition.

8. A method according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of said plurality of function portions comprises an external action function portion.

9. A method according to claim 8 , wherein said external action function portion provides an image and a command to an external image processing application for processing.

10. A method according to claim 1 , wherein at least one of said plurality of function portions comprises an interactive function portion configured to pause execution of the project definition.

11. A method according to claim 1 , wherein said operation of executing said project definition is configured to process image data corresponding to a plurality of images to adjust characteristics of said images so as to bring them into general conformity with each other.

12. One or more computer-readable storage media storing computer-readable instructions for execution by a processor to perform a method which recognizes a set of predetermined function definitions that are different, at least one of said predetermined function definitions defining a function for editing image data, the method comprising:

storing of a project definition that is operable when executed to edit said image data and which includes:

a plurality of function portions which each correspond to one of said function definitions in said set, and which each define at least one input port and at least one output port that are functionally related according to the corresponding function definition, at least one of said plurality of function portions comprising a user-defined custom definition function portion associated with said project definition;

a further portion which includes a source portion identifying a data source and defining an output port through which said image data from the data source can be produced, and which includes a destination portion identifying a data destination and defining an input port through which said image data can be supplied to the data destination; and binding information which includes binding portions that each associate a respective said input port with one of said output ports;

execution of said project definition; and

automatic transmission of a communication to a remote device through a communication link after editing said image data during execution of said project definition, wherein transmission of said communication occurs after editing a predetermined number of images.

13. A computer-readable storage media according to claim 12 , wherein said program is operable when executed to effect said transmission of said communication as the execution of said project definition is completing.

14. A computer-readable storage media according to claim 12 , wherein said program is operable when executed to format said communication as an electronic mail message.

15. A computer-readable storage media according to claim 12 , wherein said program is operable when executed to cause one of said function portions to effect said transmission of said communication.

16. A computer-readable storage media according to claim 12 , wherein said communication identifies an occurrence of a predefined condition.

17. A method, comprising the steps of:

providing a set of predetermined function definitions, at least one of said predetermined function definitions defining a function for editing image data;

storing a project definition that is operable when executed to edit said image data and which includes:

a plurality of function portions which each correspond to one of said function definitions in said set, and which each define at least one input port and at least one output port that are functionally related according to the corresponding function definition;

a further portion which includes:

a source portion identifying a data source and defining an output port through which said image data from the data source can be produced, and

a destination portion identifying a data destination and defining an input port through which said image data can be supplied to the data destination; and

binding information which includes binding portions that each associate a respective said input port with one of said output ports;

executing said project definition, wherein said project definition is configured to process image data corresponding to a plurality of images to adjust characteristics of said images so as to bring them into general conformity with each other.

18. A method according to claim 17 , further comprising automatically transmitting a communication to a remote device through a communication link after editing said image data during execution of said project definition, wherein transmitting said communication occurs after editing a predetermined number of images.

19. One or more computer-readable storage media storing computer-readable instructions for execution by a processor to perform a method which recognizes a set of predetermined function definitions that are different, at least one of said predetermined function definitions defining a function for editing image data, the method comprising:

providing a set of predetermined function definitions, at least one of said predetermined function definitions defining a function for editing image data;

storing a project definition that is operable when executed to edit said image data and which includes:

a plurality of function portions which each correspond to one of said function definitions in said set, and which each define at least one input port and at least one output port that are functionally related according to the corresponding function definition;

a further portion which includes:

a source portion identifying a data source and defining an output port through which said image data from the data source can be produced, and

a destination portion identifying a data destination and defining an input port through which said image data can be supplied to the data destination; and

binding information which includes binding portions that each associate a respective said input port with one of said output ports;

executing said project definition, wherein said project definition is configured to process image data corresponding to a plurality of images to adjust characteristics of said images so as to bring them into general conformity with each other.

20. A computer-readable storage media according to claim 19 , further comprising automatically transmitting a communication to a remote device through a communication link after editing said image data during execution of said project definition, wherein transmitting said communication occurs after editing a predetermined number of images.
