Abstract

A system and method for providing analytical tools for a community of investors having investment portfolios. A first tool provides an indication of a user's selection effectiveness regarding the user's choice of investments relative to those sectors in which the investment resides, and relative to a broader market. A second tool allows the user to evaluate the effectiveness of community stimuli on the user's portfolio. A third tool provides the user the capability to view relationships among a plurality of preferred analysts. With a fourth tool, a user may view a plurality of other analysts the user referred to the community.

Claims (61)

1. A method, implemented in a computer-readable medium, comprising providing a set of tools to a plurality of members in a virtual community including:

accepting a choice of investments from a first community member, each of said choice of investments including a motivation, said motivation specifying if said choice of investment was made responsive to another member in said virtual community;

providing a first tool to indicate a selection effectiveness of said choice of investments of said first community member relative to those sectors in which each of the investments reside, wherein the first tool provides a graphical representation of the selection effectiveness;

providing a second tool to evaluate the effectiveness of an influence of said virtual community on said first member's choice of investments, wherein the second tool provides a first graphical representation of the performance of all of said first community member's choice of investments and a second graphical representation of the said first community member's choice of investments excluding those investments that have a motivation specifying said choice of investment was made responsive to another member in said virtual community;

providing a third tool to view a representation of a plurality of preferred community members; and

providing a fourth tool to view a representation of a plurality of referred community members.

2. The method as set forth in claim 1 wherein providing the first tool comprises:

separating securities in a portfolio of the user by sector;

rating the performance of the securities relative to a sector to which it belongs; and

providing an indicator of the user's effectiveness at choosing securities within the sector.

3. The method as set forth in claim 1 wherein providing the second tool comprises:

calculating a return for an entire portfolio of the first community member for a time window; and

calculating a return for a subset of the portfolio that excludes the choice of investments with a motivation specifying the choice of investment was made responsive to another member in said virtual community for the time window.

4. The method as set forth in claim 1 wherein providing the third tool comprises:

associating members of the virtual community with each other based on a community member preference;

displaying a representation of the association within a degree of relationship.

5. The method as set forth in claim 1 wherein providing the fourth tool comprises:

accepting a referral of new virtual community members;

maintaining a hierarchical record of relatedness between members of the virtual community; and

displaying a representation of the relatedness between members of the virtual community within a degree of relationship.

6. The method as set forth in claim 1 wherein said motivation specifies a specific community member when said motivation specifies that the choice of investment was made responsive to another member in said virtual community.

7. A method, implemented in a computer-readable medium, said method comprising:

establishing a virtual community of securities buyers, said virtual community comprising a plurality of community members and a set of relationships between each said community members;

accepting a choice of investments from a first community member for a portfolio, each of said choice of investments including a motivation, said motivation specifying if said choice of investment was made responsive to another member in said virtual community;

calculating a return for the portfolio of said first community member for a time window;

calculating a return for a subset of the portfolio that excludes investments having a motivation specifying said choice of investment was made responsive to another member in said virtual community; and

graphically illustrating said return for the portfolio of said first community member and said return for said subset of the portfolio that excludes investments having a motivation.

8. The method as set forth in claim 7 wherein graphically illustrating comprises:

displaying a first line on a graph showing the return for the portfolio; and

displaying a second line on the graph showing the return for the subset.

9. The method as set forth in claim 7 wherein said motivation specifies a specific community member when said motivation specifies that the choice of investment was made responsive to another member in said virtual community.

10. A machine readable medium having instructions stored thereon which when executed by a processor cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

accepting a choice of investments from a first community member in a virtual community, each of said choice of investments including a motivation, said motivation specifying if said choice of investment was made responsive to another member in said virtual community;

providing a first tool to indicate a selection effectiveness of said choice of investments of said first community member relative to those sectors in which each of the investments reside, wherein the first tool provides a graphical representation of the selection effectiveness;

providing a second tool to evaluate the effectiveness of an influence of said virtual community on said first community member's choice of investments, wherein the second tool provides a first graphical representation of the performance of all of said first community member's choice of investments and a second graphical representation of the said first community member's choice of investments that have a motivation specifying said choice of investment was not made responsive to another member in said virtual community;

providing a third tool to view a representation of a plurality of preferred community members; and

providing a fourth tool to view a representation of a plurality of referred community members.

11. The machine readable medium having instructions stored thereon as claimed in claim 10 wherein providing the first tool comprises:

separating securities in a portfolio of the user by sector;

rating the performance of the securities relative to a sector to which it belongs; and

providing an indicator of the user's effectiveness at choosing securities within the sector.

12. The machine readable medium having instructions stored thereon as set forth in claim 10 wherein providing the second tool comprises:

calculating a return for an entire portfolio of the first community member for a time window; and

calculating a return for a subset of the portfolio that excludes the choice of investments with a motivation specifying the choice of investment was made responsive to another member in said virtual community for the time window.

13. The machine readable medium having instructions stored thereon as set forth in claim 10 wherein providing the third tool comprises:

associating members of the virtual community with each other based on a community member preference;

displaying a representation of the association within a degree of relationship.

14. The machine readable medium having instructions stored thereon as set forth in claim 10 wherein providing the third tool comprises:

accepting a referral of new virtual community members;

maintaining a hierarchical record of relatedness between members of the virtual community; and

displaying a representation of the relatedness between members of the virtual community within a degree of relationship.

15. The machine readable medium having instructions stored thereon as set forth in claim 10 wherein said motivation specifies a specific community member when said motivation specifies that the choice of investment was made responsive to another member in said virtual community.

16. A machine readable medium having instructions stored thereon which when executed by a processor cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

accepting a choice of investments for a portfolio from a first community member of a virtual community comprising a plurality of community members, each of said choice of investments including a motivation, said motivation specifying if said choice of investment was made responsive to another member in said virtual community;

calculating a return for the portfolio of said first community member for a time window;

calculating a return for a subset of the portfolio that excludes investments having a motivation specifying said choice of investment was made responsive to another member in said virtual community; and

graphically illustrating said return for the portfolio of said first community member and said return for said subset of the portfolio that excludes investments having a motivation.

17. The machine readable medium having instructions stored thereon as set forth in claim 16 wherein graphically illustrating comprises:

displaying a first line on a graph showing the return for the portfolio; and

displaying a second line on the graph showing the return for the subset.

18. The machine readable medium having instructions stored thereon as set forth in claim 16 wherein said motivation specifies a specific community member when said motivation specifies that the choice of investment was made responsive to another member in said virtual community.
