Abstract

A limited-use browser and related security system control access to content stored on a server computer linked to a network. The security system secures the content on the server and only permits it to be downloaded to a client computer running the limited-user browser or a general purpose browser executing an add-in security module providing the same functions as the limited-user browser. The limited-use browser or module secures the downloaded content on the client computer and displays it in a “view-only” mode. While the secured content is being displayed, menu selections, key combination, or pointing device commands initiated on the client computer that would modify the content or create a copy on another medium are either disabled as a default or monitored to determine if the action is permitted.

Claims (21)

1. A method of receiving compensation for a security system for protecting content distributed over a computer network comprising:

selling a server security program to a content provider; and

selling a plurality of copies of a limited-use client program to the content provider for licensing to users wishing to access the content;

wherein the server security program distributes the content to a client system when the client system has the limited-use client program and wherein the limited-use client program is a web browser program configured to disable selected reproduction functions of the web browser program while the content distributed is detected as being displayed by the web browser program at the client system.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the compensation is received at least from one of (a) when the server security program is executed by the content provider and (b) when the content provider licenses one of the plurality of copies.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the compensation is based on advertising revenue obtained by the content provider based on advertising in connection with a user accessing content protected by the security system.

4. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising:

the server security program distributing authorization information along with the content,

wherein the web browser disables the non-ephemeral reproduction of the distributed content as a function of the authorization information.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the web browser program is configured to disable non-ephemeral reproduction of the content by at least one of: window subclassing, clipboard flushing, disabling a browser function, source code encryption, user level encryption, securing cache content, and device context monitoring.

6. A method of receiving compensation for distributing protected content over a computer network comprising:

(A) providing network accessible protected content from a source;

(B) authorizing downloading of protected content from a source to a client system;

(B1) providing an end-user at the client system with a web browser program configured to disable non-ephemeral reproduction functions of the web browser program while the protected content is detected as being displayed by the web browser program at the client system; and

(C) preventing, until compensation is received, non-ephemeral reproduction of the downloaded content, while the downloaded content is being displayed at the client system.

7. In a computer program product for use with a computer system operatively connectable to a computer network and capable of distributing protected content over a computer network, the computer program product comprising a computer useable medium having embodied therein program code comprising:

(A) program code for providing network accessible protected content from a source;

(B) program code for authorizing downloading of protected content from a source to a client system;

(B1) program code for a web browser program configured to disable non-ephemeral reproduction functions of the web browser program while the distributed content is detected as being displayed by the web browser program at the client system; and

(C) program code for preventing, until compensation is received, non-ephemeral reproduction of the downloaded content while the downloaded content is being displayed by the client system.
