Abstract

Feminine undergarments, particularly brassieres and other body shaping garments that are fabricated using a multi-layered fabric laminate that is formed by gluing multiple fabric layers together, preferably to permit body shaping garments to be substantially fabricated from a single main piece of material or blank cut from the multi-layered fabric laminate and which has finished edges which do not require separate binding or narrow edge finishing, together with a method of making such garments, both on an individual, batch basis, as well as an automated process for making the fabric laminate and multiple garments on a continuous basis, are disclosed. Multi-layer composite fabric laminate materials wherein different portions of at least one fabric layer thereof are made of different fabrics, and a method for making them, are also disclosed.

Claims (58)

1. A method of forming an undergarment comprising:

inserting an adhesive layer between a first fabric layer and a second fabric layer to form a fabric composite, said composite having a periphery that is larger than an outer periphery of the undergarment;

causing said adhesive layer to form a laminate from said composite; and

removing a selvage from said laminate at said outer periphery to form a self finished edge of the undergarment, wherein said self finished edge is a cut edge.

2. The method as in claim 1 , wherein the undergarment is a brassiere.

3. The method as in claim 1 , wherein said self finished edge resists unraveling.

4. The method as in claim 1 , wherein said self finished edge has a shape selected from the group consisting of a straight edge, a scalloped edge, and any combination thereof.

5. The method as in claim 1 , wherein said selvage is between about one half of an inch and an inch.

6. The method as in claim 1 , wherein removing said selvage from said laminate comprises moving a cutting device along said outer periphery.

7. The method as in claim 1 , wherein removing said selvage from said laminate comprises punching a die into said laminate wherein said die corresponds to said outer periphery.

8. The method as in claim 1 , wherein said adhesive layer only bonds said first and second fabric layers together in a selected region so that a non-bonded region is formed.

9. The method as in claim 8 , wherein said non-bonded region is a breast cup region.

10. The method as in claim 1 , further comprising molding a portion of said laminate to a desired shape after causing said adhesive layer to form said laminate.

11. The method as in claim 1 , wherein said desired shape defines a breast cup region of the undergarment.

12. The method as in claim 1 , further comprising gluing or fusing a first region of said self finished edge to a second region of said self finished edge to form a continuous closed tubular undergarment.

13. The method as in claim 1 , further comprising inserting a fabric member between said first fabric layer and said adhesive layer.

14. The method as in claim 13 , wherein said fabric member is selected from the group consisting of an underwire channel, a gore, a fabric panel, a bridging piece, and any combination of the foregoing.

15. The method as in claim 13 , wherein said fabric member is an underwire channel.

16. The method as in claim 15 , further comprising inserting an underwire into said underwire channel before or after causing said adhesive layer to form said laminate.

17. The method as in claim 1 , wherein said first fabric layer defines an exterior layer or an interior layer of the undergarment.

18. The method as in claim 1 , further comprising abutting a first fabric to a second fabric to form at least one of said first and second fabric layers.

19. The method as in claim 18 , further comprising inserting a bridging piece between said first fabric layer and said adhesive layer at a juncture of said first and second fabrics.

20. A method of forming an undergarment comprising:

applying an adhesive layer to a first fabric layer;

overlying said adhesive layer with a second fabric layer;

causing said adhesive layer to bond said first and second fabric layers together to form a laminate, said laminate having a periphery that is larger than an outer periphery of the undergarment; and

cutting said laminate along said outer periphery to form a self finished edge of the undergarment that resists unraveling, wherein said self finished edge is a cut edge.

21. The method as in claim 20 , wherein said adhesive layer only bonds said first and second fabric layers together in a selected region so that a non-bonded region is formed.

22. The method as in claim 21 , wherein said non-bonded region is a breast cup region.

23. The method as in claim 20 , further comprising molding a portion of said laminate to a desired shape after forming said laminate.

24. The method as in claim 23 , wherein said desired shape defines a breast cup region of the undergarment.

25. The method as in claim 23 , further comprising gluing or fusing a first region of said self finished edge to a second region of said self finished edge to form a continuous closed tubular undergarment.

26. The method as in claim 20 , further comprising inserting a fabric member between said first fabric layer and said adhesive layer.

27. The method as in claim 26 , wherein said fabric member is selected from the group consisting of an underwire channel, a gore, a fabric panel, a bridging piece, and any combination thereof.

28. The method as in claim 26 , wherein said fabric member is an underwire channel.

29. The method as in claim 28 , further comprising inserting an underwire into said underwire channel before or after forming said laminate.

30. The method as in claim 20 , wherein said first fabric layer defines an exterior layer or an interior layer of the undergarment.

31. The method as in claim 20 , further comprising abutting a first fabric to a second fabric to form at least one of said first and second fabric layers.

32. The method as in claim 31 , further comprising inserting a bridging piece between said first fabric layer and said adhesive layer at a juncture of said first and second fabrics.

33. A method of forming an undergarment comprising:

forming an adhesive layer having an adhesive-free portion;

surrounding said adhesive layer with a first fabric layer and a second fabric layer;

causing said adhesive layer to bond said first and second fabric layers together to form a laminate, said laminate having a periphery that is larger than an outer periphery of the undergarment; and

cutting said laminate along said outer periphery to form a cut edge that defines a self finished edge of the undergarment that resists unraveling, wherein said adhesive-free portion defines a non-bonded region of said first and second fabric layers.

34. The method as in claim 33 , wherein said non-bonded region is a breast cup region.

35. The method as in claim 34 , further comprising molding said non-bonded region to a desired shape after forming said laminate.

36. The method as in claim 35 , wherein said desired shape defines a breast cup of the undergarment.

37. The method as in claim 36 , further comprising gluing or fusing a first region of said self finished edge to a second region of said self finished edge to form a continuous closed tubular undergarment.

38. A method of forming an undergarment comprising:

inserting an adhesive layer between a first fabric layer and a second fabric layer;

causing said adhesive layer to form a laminate from said first and second fabric layers, said laminate having a periphery that is larger than an outer periphery of the undergarment;

cutting said laminate along said outer periphery to form a cut edge that defines a self finished edge of the undergarment; and

gluing or fusing a first region of said self finished edge to a second region of said self finished edge so that the undergarment is a continuous closed tubular undergarment.

39. A method of forming an undergarment comprising:

abutting a first fabric to a second fabric to form a first fabric layer;

inserting an adhesive layer between said first fabric layer and a second fabric layer;

causing said adhesive layer to bond said first and second fabric layers together to form a laminate, said laminate having a periphery that is larger than an outer periphery of the undergarment; and

cutting said laminate along said outer periphery to form a cut edge that defines a self finished edge of the undergarment that resists unraveling.
