Abstract

The present invention relates to the production of platelet gels formed into beneficial geometric shapes. Specifically the present invention provides a simpler way to introduce platelet gel for specific uses, such as into the cavity of a gum left after a tooth extraction. Molds of predetermined shapes are provided for forming the desired shape.

Claims (37)

1. An autologous platelet gel comprising thrombin and an anticoagulated blood component, each of which is isolated from an individual to whom the platelet gel is to be applied and wherein said thrombin is isolated from a portion of said anticoagulated blood component, said platelet gel having a predetermined geometric shape corresponding to a cavity in the individual.

2. The autologous platelet gel of claim 1 , wherein said predetermined geometric shape is created by gelling said autologous platelet gel in a mold having the desired shape.

3. The autologous platelet gel of claim 2 , wherein said mold is constructed of a wettable or non-wettable interior surface.

4. The autologous platelet gel of claim 3 , wherein said interior surface of said mold is glass.

5. The autologous platelet gel of claim 3 , wherein said interior surface of said mold is plastic.

6. The autologous platelet gel of claim 3 , wherein said interior surface of said mold is aluminum.

7. The autologous platelet gel of claim 3 , wherein said mold has a basic conical shape.

8. The autologous platelet gel of claim 3 , wherein said mold has a rod like shape.

9. The autologous platelet gel of claim 1 , wherein said mold has a rectangular shape.

10. The autologous platelet gel of claim 7 , wherein said conical shaped autologous platelet gel is used as a plug in a hole in the gum created from an extracted tooth.

11. The autologous platelet gel of claim 8 , wherein said rod shaped autologous platelet gel is used as a plug in a hole in bone.

12. The autologous platelet gel of claim 11 , wherein said autologous platelet gel further comprises bone fragments or bone augmenting materials.

13. A method of making an autologous platelet gel having a predetermined geometric shape, comprising:

introducing thrombin and an anticoagulated blood component isolated from an individual to whom the platelet gel is to be applied into a mold having the desired geometric shape, wherein said thrombin is isolated from a portion of said anticoagulated blood component;

allowing said thrombin and said inactive blood component to set in said mold; and removing said autologous platelet gel from said mold.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein said anticoagulated blood component is platelet rich plasma.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein said anticoagulated blood component is platelet poor plasma.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein said autologous platelet gel is inserted into a cavity in the body of the individual from whom the thrombin and anticoagulated blood component were isolated.

17. The method of claim 13 , further comprising introducing any organic or inorganic material.

18. The autologous platelet gel of claim 1 , wherein said anticoagulated blood component is platelet rich plasma.

19. The autologous platelet gel of claim 1 , wherein said anticoagulated blood component is platelet poor plasma.

20. The autologous platelet gel of claim 1 , wherein said thrombin is isolated by reactivating said portion of said anticoagulated blood component to form a clot and triturating said clot to form a serum containing said thrombin.

21. The method of claim 13 , wherein said thrombin is isolated by reactivating said portion of said anticoagulated blood component to form a clot and triturating said clot to form a serum containing said thrombin.

22. An autologous platelet gel comprising thrombin and an anticoagulated blood component, each of which is isolated from an individual to whom the platelet gel is to be applied and wherein said thrombin is isolated from a portion of said anticoagulated blood component, said platelet gel having a predetermined basic conical shape corresponding to a cavity in the individual.

23. An autologous platelet gel comprising thrombin and an anticoagulated blood component, each of which is isolated from an individual to whom the platelet gel is to be applied and wherein said thrombin is isolated from a portion of said anticoagulated blood component, said platelet gel having a predetermined rod like shape corresponding to a cavity in the individual.

24. The autologous platelet gel of claim 23 , wherein said rod shaped autologous platelet gel corresponds to a hole in a bone of the individual.

25. The autologous platelet gel of claim 23 , wherein said autologous platelet gel further comprises one or more bone components or bone augmenting materials.

26. An autologous platelet gel comprising thrombin and an anticoagulated blood component, each of which is isolated from an individual to whom the platelet gel is to be applied and wherein said thrombin is isolated from a portion of said anticoagulated blood component, said platelet gel having a predetermined conical corresponding to a hole in a gum created from an extracted tooth of the individual.

27. A method of claim 13 wherein the geometric shape corresponds to a body cavity of the individual.

28. The method of claim 13 wherein said mold has a basic conical shape.

29. The method of claim 28 wherein said conical shaped autologous platelet gel is used as a plug in a hole in the gum created from an extracted tooth.

30. The method of claim 13 wherein said mold has a rod-like shape.

31. The method of claim 29 wherein the shape of said rod like autologous platelet gel corresponds to a hole in bone of an individual.

32. The method of claim 30 wherein said autologous platelet gel further comprises one or more bone components or bone augmenting materials.

33. The method of claim 13 wherein said mold has a rectangular shape.

34. The method of claim 13 wherein the autologous platelet gel is pre-shaped to plug a hole in tissue or bone created from injury.

35. The method of claim 13 wherein the autologous platelet gel is pre-shaped to plug a hole in tissue or bone created from a surgical procedure.
