Abstract

Decorative ionomeric surfaced film and sheet (e.g., multilayer co-extruded polymer) and articles made therefrom (e.g., automotive panels and parts) exhibiting good weatherability, mar resistance, and surface appearance of a high quality automotive finish (including color, haze, gloss, and DOI) and economical process for making (e.g., co-extrusion) and using (e.g., thermoforming and injection backfilling) the same.

Claims (17)

1. A coextruded multilayer film or sheet comprises a first layer and a second layer and having a thickness of 12 to about 40 mils wherein

the film or sheet is a thermoformable film or sheet;

the first layer is a surface layer and consists essentially of an ionomer and a first additive;

the second layer is in contact with the first layer and consists of an ionomer and a second additive;

the ionomer consists essentially of a copolymer derived from ethylene and an α,β-ethylenically unsaturated C 3 to C 8 carboxylic acid; and said copolymer is partially neutralized with metal ions;

the first and second additives are independently one or more UV stabilizer, UV absorber, antioxidant, thermal stabilizer, anti-stat additive, processing aid, fiber glass, mineral filler, anti-slip agent, plasticizer, nucleating agent, pigment, dye, flake, or mixtures thereof; and

the surface layer has a gloss that exceeds 60% at a 20 degree angle.

2. The film or sheet of claim 1 wherein the first additive or second additive is pigment, dye, flake, or mixtures thereof.

3. The film or sheet of claim 1 wherein the multilayer film or sheet further comprises a third co-extruded polymeric layer in contact with said second co-extruded polymeric layer.

4. The film or sheet of claim 3 wherein the first additive or second additive is pigment, dye, flake, or mixtures thereof.

5. The film or sheet of claim 2 wherein the first layer is clear.

6. The film or sheet of claim 4 wherein the first layer is clear.

7. The film or sheet of claim 6 wherein the ionomer in the first layer and the ionomer in the second layer have flow properties that are matched to allow the ionomer in the first layer and the ionomer in the second layer flow to the full width of the die.

8. The film or sheet of claim 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , or 7 wherein the film or sheet is adhered to a substrate.

9. The film or sheet of claim 8 wherein the substrate is metal, polymer, or polymer composite.

10. The film or sheet of claim 9 wherein the substrate has a printed design or pattern and said multilayer film or sheet is clear.

11. The film or sheet of claim 8 wherein the film or sheet is an interior surface or exterior surface of an appliance panel, an automotive part, or an article for aviation application.
