Controlled-puncture films
The present invention discloses methods of controlling the puncturability, and optionally the sealability (the ability of a film to conform around a puncturing object) and resealability (the ability of a film to close a hole made by a puncturing object), of polymeric films. Systems comprising a film and puncturing object are also disclosed. Puncturability is controlled by achieving targeted levels of the friction between the film and a puncturing object, the film's flexural rigidity, the film's recovering stress, and the film's elongation at break.
1. A polymeric film comprising first and second parallel major surfaces wherein the film can be punctured when the film is stretched to a given displacement by a puncturing object applied to the first major surface, but the film cannot be punctured when the film is stretched to the same displacement by the same puncturing object applied to the second major surface, wherein the film comprises at least one elastomeric layer and has a targeted level of resealability.
2. The polymeric film of claim 1 , wherein at least one the layer of film comprises a high density polyethylene (HDPE).
3. The polymeric film of claim 1 , wherein at least one layer of the film comprises a very low density polyethylene (VLDPE).
4. The polymeric film of claim 1 , wherein at least one layer of the film comprises a high density polyethylene (HDPE) and at least one layer of the film comprises a very low density polyethylene (VLDPE).
5. The polymeric film of claim 1 , wherein said polymeric film is a multilayer film.
