Abstract

The invention provides methods and compositions related to transgenic plants which incorporate genetic traits of the marine eelgrass Zostera marina . These traits include pathogen resistance, which may be conferred by stimulating zosteric acid biosynthesis.

Claims (31)

1. An isolated nucleic acid which hybridizes under stringent conditions including a wash step in 0.2×SSC at 65° C. to a nucleic acid consisting of the nucleotide sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 15, wherein the isolated nucleic acid encodes a protein having sulfotransferase activity.

2. An isolated nucleic acid encoding a polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence having at least 95% identity with SEQ ID NO: 16, wherein the polypeptide has a sulfotransferase activity.

3. The isolated nucleic acid of claim 2 , encoding a polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence having at least 99% identity with SEQ ID NO: 16.

4. The isolated nucleic acid of claim 2 , encoding a polypeptide comprising the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 16.

5. The isolated nucleic acid of claim 2 , encoding a polypeptide consisting of the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 16.

6. The isolated nucleic acid of claim 1 , wherein the nucleic acid comprises the nucleotide sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 15.

7. The isolated nucleic acid of claim 1 , consisting of the nucleotide sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 15.

8. A vector comprising the nucleic acid of claim 2 .

9. A vector comprising the nucleic acid of claim 1 .

10. A vector comprising the nucleic acid of claim 3 .

11. An expression vector comprising the nucleic acid of claim 2 .

12. An expression vector comprising the nucleic acid of claim 1 .

13. An expression vector comprising the nucleic acid of claim 3 .

14. A cell comprising the vector of claim 11 .

15. The cell of claim 14 , which is a prokaryotic cell.

16. The cell of claim 14 , which is an eukaryotic cell.

17. A cell comprising the vector of claim 12 .

18. The cell of claim 17 , which is a prokaryotic cell.

19. The cell of claim 17 , which is an eukaryotic cell.

20. A cell comprising the vector of claim 13 .

21. The cell of claim 20 , which is a prokaryotic cell.

22. The cell of claim 20 , which is an eukaryotic cell.

23. A plant comprising a heterologous nucleic acid of claim 2 .

24. The plant of claim 23 , wherein the plant is a monocotyledon.

25. The plant of claim 23 , wherein the plant is a dicotyledon.

26. A plant comprising a heterologous nucleic acid of claim 1 .

27. The plant of claim 26 , wherein the plant is a monocotyledon.

28. The plant of claim 26 , wherein the plant is a dicotyledon.

29. A plant comprising a heterologous nucleic acid of claim 3 .

30. The plant of claim 29 , wherein the plant is a monocotyledon.

31. The plant of claim 29 , wherein the plant is a dicotyledon.
