Abstract

A digital audio playback device that includes a wireless communication link to enable it to interact and synchronize with computing platforms as well as other mobile digital audio players and fixed digital audio players. A digital audio playback device is configured such that the computing platform may automatically or upon user request copy, add or remove digital audio content or other information, such as playlists. In addition, digital content on the digital audio playback device can be synchronized with a computing platform. In one embodiment of the invention, the digital audio playback device is configured to enable wireless communication among other digital playback devices and/or a computing platform to allow synchronization and control.

Claims (43)

1. An audio player that is adapted to synchronize with a gateway device over a wireless communication link, comprising:

a discovery component configured to detect a broadcast from the gateway device when the audio player is within a range of the wireless communication link and to respond to the broadcast with a broadcast acknowledgement message;

a polling component configured to wait for a periodic poll message from the gateway device upon a determination that the gateway device is within the range, the poll message being different than the broadcast, and wherein the polling component responds with at least one poll response message (i) specifying an identity of the audio player, (ii) indicating to the gateway device that the audio player is still within the range of the wireless communication link, and (iii) indicating that a user of the audio player requests synchronization;

a message component, executing on at least one processor, configured to handle a content query from the gateway device and to reply with a content response message, the content response message including a list of digital audio content stored on the audio player that the gateway device can compare with the digital audio content stored on the gateway device, so that the gateway device can determine new digital audio content for the audio player; and

a synchronization component configured to receive, from the gateway device, the new digital audio content and to store the new digital audio content with the digital audio content already stored on the audio player, so that the digital audio content stored on the audio player is synchronized with the digital audio content stored on gateway device.

2. The audio player of claim 1 , wherein the audio player includes a display configured to display a list of the digital audio content stored on the audio player.

3. The audio player of claim 1 , wherein the audio player comprises at least one of a mobile device, a stationary device, an MP3 player, and a CD player.

4. The audio player of claim 1 , wherein the polling component is further configured to:

determine that the user of the audio player inputted a command directing the audio player to synchronize with the gateway device;

set a synchronization flag in the poll response message responsive to the user input, the synchronization flag indicating that the user of the audio player requests synchronization.

5. The audio player of claim 1 , further comprising a playback component configured to selectively playback the digital audio content stored on the audio player.

6. The audio player of claim 1 , wherein the content response message sent to the gateway device further includes an indication of available storage on the audio player, so that the gateway device will send the new digital audio content only when there is available storage to store the new digital audio content.

7. The audio player of claim 1 , wherein the poll message is a first poll message, and wherein the polling component is further configured to:

wait for a second poll message from the gateway device after determining that the gateway device is within the range; and

determine that the gateway device is no longer within the range if the second poll message is not received after a time.

8. The audio player of claim 1 , wherein the poll message is sent by the gateway device to audio players known to be within the range of the gateway device.

9. The audio player of claim 1 , wherein:

the discovery component determines from the broadcast that the gateway device is within the range; and

the polling component is configured to wait for the periodic poll message from the gateway device in response to the determination by the discovery component that the gateway device is within the range.

10. A method performed by an audio player for synchronizing with a gateway device over a wireless communication link, comprising:

detecting a broadcast from the gateway device when the audio player is within a range of the wireless communication link;

responding to the broadcast with a broadcast acknowledgement message;

waiting for a periodic poll message from the gateway device upon a determination that the gateway device is within the range, the poll message being different than the broadcast;

responding with at least one poll response message (i) specifying an identity of the audio player, (ii) indicating to the gateway device that the audio player is still within the range of the wireless communication link, and (iii) indicating that a user of the audio player requests synchronization;

handling a content query from the gateway device by a processor executing on the audio player, and replying with a content response message, the content response message including a list of digital audio content stored on the audio player that the gateway device can compare with the digital audio content stored on the gateway device, so that the gateway device can determine new digital audio content for the audio player;

receiving, from the gateway device, the new digital audio content; and

storing the new digital audio content with the digital audio content already stored on the audio player, so that the digital audio content stored on the audio player is synchronized with the digital audio content stored on gateway device.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

displaying a list of the digital audio content stored on the audio player.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the audio player comprises at least one of a mobile device, a stationary device, an MP3 player, and a CD player.

13. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

determining that the user of the audio player inputted a command directing the audio player to synchronize with the gateway device;

setting a synchronization flag in the poll response message responsive to the user input, the synchronization flag indicating that the user of the audio player requests synchronization.

14. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

selectively playing back the digital audio content stored on the audio player.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the content response message sent to the gateway device further includes an indication of available storage on the audio player, so that the gateway device will send the new digital audio content only when there is available storage to store the new digital audio content.

16. The method of claim 10 , wherein the poll message is a first poll message, and wherein the method further comprises:

waiting for a second poll message from the gateway device after determining that the gateway device is within the range; and

determining that the gateway device is no longer within the range if the second poll message is not received after a time.

17. The method of claim 10 , wherein the poll message is sent by the gateway device to audio players known to be within the range of the gateway device.

18. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

determining from the broadcast that the gateway device is within the range,

wherein the step of waiting for the periodic poll message is in response to the step of determining that the gateway device is within the range.
