Abstract

The invention relates to methods and apparatus for manufacturing intravascular stents wherein the intravascular stent has its inner surface treated to promote the migration of endothelial cells onto the inner surface of the intravascular stent. In particular, the inner surface of the intravascular stent has at least one groove formed therein.

Claims (18)

1. A method for manufacturing a metallic intravascular stent, the method comprising the steps of:

providing a blank;

fixedly securing the blank;

disposing an impression roller within the blank, wherein the impression roller has a diameter smaller than an interior diameter of the blank and the surface of the impression roller includes a raised pattern; and

impressing at least one groove from the raised pattern to substantially the entire length of an inner surface of the blank by rolling the impression roller around the inner surface of the blank to form the metallic intravascular stent, wherein the at least one groove has a depth less than a distance between the inner surface and an outer surface of the stent.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one groove is disposed with a longitudinal axis being disposed substantially parallel with the longitudinal axis of the blank.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one groove is disposed substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the blank.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one groove is disposed at an obtuse or acute angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the blank.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one groove includes a cross-sectional configurations selected from the group consisting of square shaped, U shaped, triangular, V shaped, rectangular shaped, and triangular- keyway shaped.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one groove includes a depth D within a range of approximately one-half to approximately ten microns and a width W within a range of approximately two to approximately forty microns.

7. An apparatus for manufacturing a metallic intravascular stent having an inner surface and an outer surface and at least one groove formed in the inner surface, the apparatus comprising:

a backup housing adapted to fixedly and circumferentially secure a blank; and

an impression roller to be disposed within the blank and having a surface including a raised pattern disposed thereon, wherein the impression roller has a diameter smaller than an interior diameter of the blank, wherein the impression roller is disposed in mechanical communication with a rotating drive mechanism, and wherein the impression roller is in rolling contact with an inner surface of the blank such that the impression roller impresses at least one groove from the raised pattern to substantially the entire length of the inner surface of the blank, wherein the at least one groove has a depth less than a distance between the inner surface and an outer surface of the blank.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the at least one groove is disposed with a longitudinal axis being disposed substantially parallel with the longitudinal axis of the blank.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the at least one groove is disposed substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the blank.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the at least one groove is disposed at an obtuse or acute angle with respect to the longitudinal axis of the blank.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the at least one groove includes a cross-sectional configurations selected from the group consisting of square shaped, U shaped, triangular, V shaped, rectangular shaped, and triangular- keyway shaped.

12. The method of claim 7 , wherein the at least one groove includes a depth D within a range of approximately one-half to approximately ten microns and a width W within a range of approximately two to approximately forty microns.
