Abstract

The invention features a lubricating polyeptide and methods of lubricating joints or other tissues by administering the polypeptide systemically or directly to tissues.

Claims (5)

1. A composition comprising an isolated lubricating megakaryocyte stimulating factor (MSF) gene product, said gene product consisting of amino acids 67-106 and 200-1140 of SEQ ID NO:1 and at least one O-linked oligosaccharide, wherein said gene product reduces a coefficient of friction between bearing surfaces.

2. A composition comprising an isolated lubricating MSF gene product, said gene product consisting of amino acids 1-25, 67-106, and 200-1404 of SEQ ID NO:1 and at least one O-linked oligosaccharide, wherein said gene product reduces a coefficient of friction between bearing surfaces.

3. A composition comprising an isolated lubricating MSF gene product, said gene product consisting of amino acids 1-156 and 200-1404 of SEQ ID NO:1 and at least one O-linked oligosaccharide, wherein said gene product reduces a coefficient of friction between bearing surfaces.

4. A composition comprising an isolated lubricating MSF gene product, said gene product consisting of amino acids 1-106 and 200-1404 and at least one O-linked oligosaccharide, wherein said gene product reduces a coefficient of friction between bearing surfaces.

5. The composition of claim 1 , 2 , 3 or 4 , wherein said O-linked oligosaccharide is a β(1-3)Gal-GalNAc.
