Abstract

A tire, and an apparatus and method for forming a tire. The tire may either be a tubed or tubeless tire, and is filled with a mixture of virgin rubber and small rubber pieces. Preferably, a machine grinds the core of used flatproofed tires, or pieces thereof, into a finely communicated pulverulent. The pulverent is mixed with liquid virgin flatproofing material, such as a polyurethane. An injector introduces this mixture, into the core of a tire, typically through a valve. The core of the tire is preferably substantially filled with this mixture. The injector may take the form of one or more elongated screws and the mixing may occur as the ground rubber is being conveyed by the screw.

Claims (19)

1. A method for filling a tire cavity comprising:

grinding cured polyurethane into core bits in a grinding device having an outlet;

transferring ground core bits from the outlet to an adjacent elongated screw device;

mixing core bits and a liquid virgin polyurethane in the elongated screw device;

pressurizing and transferring the mixed material into the core of a tire; and

electronically controlling the grinding device and the elongated screw device.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising transferring at least one unused flatproofing material from at least one holding tank using a transfer component connecting each holding tank to a mixing device and a transfer apparatus connecting the mixing device to the elongated rotatable screw device.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of grinding the core bits to an average diameter of less than 0.125 inches.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of grinding cure polyurethane into particles larger than core bits and transferring said particles to the grinding device.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein said mixing is completed in a first section of the elongated rotatable screw device.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein said transferring is completed in a first of section of the elongated rotatable screw device.

7. The method of claim 5 further comprising transferring at least a single stream of unused flatproofing material to said elongated screw device.

8. The method of claim 5 further comprising transferring multiple streams of unused flatproofing material to said elongated screw device.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising sensing pressure in tire cores.

10. The method of claim 9 further comprising puncturing tires to relieve excess pressure.

11. The method of claim 1 further comprising cleaning the grinding device and the elongated screw device.

12. The method of claim 10 further comprising electronically controlling the sensing and puncturing.

13. The method of claim 11 further comprising electronically controlling the cleaning of the grinding device and the elongated screw device.

14. The method of claim 2 further comprising electronically controlling the mixing in said mixing device.
