Abstract

A portable therapeutic device and method of use generate longitudinally propagating ultrasound and shear waves generated by such longitudinally propagating ultrasound to provide effective healing of wounds. A transducer having an operative surface is disposed substantially adjacent to the wound to emit ultrasound to propagate in the direction of the wound to promote healing. Reflections of the ultrasound by bone tissue, by skin layers, or by internally disposed reflective media propagate toward the wound as longitudinal waves, with shear waves generated by the longitudinal waves for the healing of the wound. A focusing element is used for focusing the propagation of the ultrasound at a predetermined angle toward the wound. The operative surface of the transducer may be annularly shaped to encircle the wound to convey the ultrasound and/or reflected ultrasound thereto.

Claims (14)

1. A method for promoting healing of a wound comprising:

determining a position for an ultrasonic transducer in the vicinity of the wound at which ultrasonic waves transmitted from the ultrasonic transducer in a first direction are reflected off a surface of a body toward an interior surface of the wound such that a sufficient level of the reflected ultrasonic waves contact the wound to promote healing thereof;

positioning the ultrasonic transducer at the determined position in the vicinity of the wound; and

emitting ultrasonic waves from the ultrasonic transducer in the first direction such that the emitted ultrasonic waves are reflected off the surface of the body toward the interior surface of the wound such that the sufficient level of the reflected ultrasonic waves contact the wound to promote healing thereof.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the body surface comprises bone tissue.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein positioning the transducer includes positioning the transducer substantially adjacent a first layer of skin and wherein the body surface comprises a second layer of skin.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the determined location is adjacent to the wound.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the first direction is angled with respect to an axis that is normal to an operative surface of the ultrasonic transducer.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the ultrasonic waves transmitted from the ultrasonic transducer in the first direction do not encounter the interior surface of the wound until after reflecting off the surface of the body.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the ultrasonic waves emitted from the ultrasonic transducer are focused in the first direction.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the ultrasonic transducer is toroidal, and wherein positioning the ultrasonic transducer comprises surrounding the wound.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the surface of the body comprises skin tissue.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the body comprises an internally disposed fabricated reflective medium.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein positioning the transducer at the determined position comprises disposing the transducer proximate a first outer skin surface portion, the wound being located at second outer skin surface portion proximate the first outer skin surface portion such that ultrasonic waves emitted from the ultrasonic transducer pass through the first outer skin surface portion to the surface of the body.
