Abstract

A calibration for a tracking error signal offset in a tracking servo system of an optical disk drive is presented. In some embodiments, the tracking error signal offset is adjusted for best servo function by, for example, adjusting the center of a tracking error signal when the tracking servo system is open to zero. In some embodiments, the tracking error signal offset is adjusted for best read function by, for example, adjusting the tracking error signal offset until the data jitter is minimized. Data jitter can be determined by reading data from the optical media and measuring the data error rate.

Claims (40)

1. In an optical disk drive having an optical pickup unit, a focus servo system for controlling the focus of the optical pickup unit on an optical disk and for generating a focus error signal corresponding to the current focus condition of the optical pickup unit relative to a desired focus condition thereof, and a tracking servo system for controlling the tracking of the disk by the optical pickup unit and for generating a tracking error signal corresponding to the current tracking condition of the optical pickup unit relative to a desired tracking condition thereof, a method of calibrating the tracking error signal with a tracking error signal offset to optimize the drive for a best read function in which at least an error rate of data read from the optical disk by the optical pickup unit is minimized, the method comprising:

insuring that the focus servo system is closed;

insuring that the tracking servo system is closed;

positioning the optical pick-up unit over a readable portion of the optical disk;

reading data from the optical disk;

measuring the error rate of the data read;

incrementing or decrementing the tracking error signal with a tracking error signal offset;

measuring the change in the error rate of the data read resulting from the tracking error signal offset; and

reiterating the foregoing steps in such a way as to minimize the error rate of the data read.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

measuring the jitter of the data read; and

correcting the tracking error signal offset in such a way as to minimize the jitter of the data read.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein correcting the tracking error signal offset includes

measuring the open loop gain of the tracking error signal at a crossover frequency; and

correcting the open loop gain of the tracking error signal at the crossover frequency to unity.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the crossover frequency is about 1.8 kHz.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein correcting the tracking error signal offset includes incrementing decrementing the tracking error signal offset to minimize the jitter of the data read.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein calibrating the tracking error signal with an offset comprises adjusting the tracking error signal offset to a value that is between a value adapted to produce an optimum tracking condition and a value adapted to produce the best read function of the optical disk drive.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the value is an average of the optimum tracking condition value and the best read function value.

8. An optical disk drive, comprising:

an optical pick-up unit; and,

a tracking servo system for controlling the tracking of an optical disk by the optical pickup unit, the servo system comprising:

an analog processor coupled to receive signals from detectors in the optical pick-up unit and provide digital signals;

at least one digital processor coupled to receive the digital signals, the at least one processor calculating a tracking error signal corresponding to the current tracking condition of the optical pickup unit relative to a desired tracking condition thereof; and,

a driver coupled to control the tracking of the optical disk by the optical pick-up unit in response to the tracking error signal,

wherein the at least one processor executes an algorithm that

positions the optical pick-up unit over a readable portion of the optical disk;

reads data from the optical disk;

measures the error rate of the data read;

increments or decrements the tracking error signal with a tracking error signal offset;

measures the change in the error rate of the data read resulting from the tracking error signal offset; and,

reiterates the preceding procedure in such a way as to minimize the error rate of the data read.

9. The drive of claim 8 , wherein the algorithm further includes instructions for:

insuring that the tracking servo system is closed;

measuring the jitter of the data read; and

correcting the tracking error signal offset in such a way as to minimize the jitter of the data read.

10. The drive of claim 8 , wherein the algorithm further includes instructions for:

measuring the open loop gain of the tracking error signal at a crossover frequency; and

adjusting the open loop gain of the trucking error signal such that is unity at the crossover frequency.

11. The drive of claim 10 , wherein the crossover frequency is about 1.8 kHz.
