Abstract

A servo system with a multi-track seek algorithm with an acceleration clamp is presented. The multi-track seek algorithm detects zero crossings in a tracking error signal, counts the number of zero crossings to form a count, and calculates a reference velocity from the count. The algorithm also determines a time period between successive zero crossings, calculates a velocity from the time period, calculates a difference signal between the reference velocity and the velocity, and adjusts the control signal so that the velocity follows the reference velocity. The reference velocity can follow a velocity profile with acceleration portions, coasting portions, and deceleration portions which move an optical pick-up unit from a starting position to a target position. The acceleration of an optical pick-up unit is clamped during the multi-track seek operation.

Claims (27)

1. A method of multi-track seeking to move an optical pick up unit to a desired track, comprising:

receiving, at a digital signal processor, digitized optical signals from the optical pick-up unit;

within the digital signal processor, selecting whether to calculate a focus error signal or a tacking error signal from the digitized optical signals;

calculating a current track crossing velocity from a derivative of the tracking error signal;

calculating the number of tracks that must be crossed by the optical pick up unit to reach the desired track;

calculating a reference track crossing velocity from the number of tracks that must be crossed;

calculating a velocity error based upon the difference between the reference track crossing velocity and the current track crossing velocity;

clamping the velocity error to a predetermined value if the velocity error exceeds the predetermined value;

accelerating the optical pick up unit to the reference track crossing velocity based upon the velocity error, the acceleration being clamped according to the clamping of the velocity error;

after the optical pick up unit has reached the reference track crossing velocity, maintaining the optical pick up unit at the reference track crossing velocity based upon the velocity error until the vicinity of the desired track has been reached; and

when the optical pick up unit has reached the vicinity of the desired track, deacclerating the optical pick up unit to reach the desired track.

2. The method of claim 1 , further including low pass filtering a focus control signal while performing the multi-track seek operation.

3. The method of claim 2 , further including sampling and holding the low-pass filtered focus control signal during the multi-track seek operation.

4. The method of claim 1 , further including adjusting the digital tracking error signal for rotations of an optical media.

5. A servo system, comprising:

an optical pick-up unit;

an analog-to-digital converter coupled to receive signals from detectors in the optical pick-up unit and provide digital signals;

at least one digital signal processor coupled to receive the digital signals, the digital signal processor calculating a control signal; and

a driver coupled to control the position of the optical pick-up unit in response to the control signal,

wherein the at least one digital signal processor executes an algorithm that:

selects whether to calculate a tracking error signal or a focus error signal from the digital optical signals;

calculates a current track crossing velocity from a derivative of the tracking error signal;

calculates the number of tracks that must be crossed by the optical pick up unit to reach the desired track;

calculates a reference track crossing velocity from the number of tracks that must be crossed;

calculates a velocity error based upon the difference between the reference track crossing velocity and the current track crossing velocity;

clamps the velocity error to a predetermined value if the error velocity exceeds the predetermined value; and

adjusts the control signal responsive to the velocity error such that the optical head accelerates to the reference velocity.
