Abstract

A digital servo system with a biased feed-forward control is disclosed. The biased feed-forward control determines the low frequency component of a control signal from the digital servo system. The low frequency component can then be added to a future control signal to form an adjusted control signal. In some embodiments, the low frequency component is then removed from the future control signals. In some embodiments, a bias signal is incremented or decremented in response to the low frequency component, the bias signal being added to future control signals.

Claims (25)

1. A method of providing a bias feed-forward for an optical disk drive, comprising:

providing a digital signal processor configured to receive digitized optical sensor signals from an optical pickup unit and form a tracking error signal (TES) from the digitized optical sensor signals, the digital signal processor configured with a digital servo algorithm that processes TES to form a control signal;

detecting a low frequency component of the control signal;

adjusting the control signal responsive to a signal related to the low frequency component to form an adjusted control signal, wherein the signal related to the low frequency component is a bias signal which is incremented or decremented by a set value in response to the low pass filtered component; and

controlling tracking in the optical disk drive responsive to the adjusted control signal.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein detecting the low frequency component includes

filtering the control signal to obtain a filtered signal; and

summing the filtered signal with previously filtered signals to form the low frequency component.

3. The method of claim 2 , further including filtering the filtered signal with a second low pass filter during a multi-track seek operation.

4. The method of claim 2 wherein filtering the control signal includes filtering with a 200 Hz second order low pass filter.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein the second low pass filter is a 20 Hz low pass filter.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the set value is one.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the bias signal is incremented or decremented with a slow cycle time.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the slow cycle time is 2 ms.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the control signal is a tracking control signal.

10. A servo system, comprising:

an optical pick-up unit;

an analog-to-digital converter coupled to receive signals from detectors in the optical pick-up unit and provide digital versions of the signals; and

at least one processor coupled to receive the digital versions and form a tracking error signal (TES) from the digitized optical sensor signals, the processor calculating a control signal from TES, wherein the at least one processor executes an algorithm that detects a low frequency component of the control signal;

adjusts the control signal responsive to a signal related to the low frequency component to form an adjusted control signal, wherein the signal related to the low frequency component is a bias signal which is incremented or decremented by a set value in response to the low pass filtered component; and

controls tracking in the optical disk drive responsive to the adjusted tracking control signal.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the low frequency component is detected by filtering the control signal with a low pass filter to obtain a filtered signal and summing the filtered signal with previously filtered signals.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the low-pass filter is a 200 Hz second order low pass filter.

13. The system of claim 11 , further including a second low pass filter that filters the filtered signal when a multi-track seek operation is executed.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the second low pass filter has a cut-off of about 20 Hz.
