Abstract

A method and apparatus to build a migration package. According to one embodiment of the invention, a plurality of programming elements are developed and stored in a configuration repository. The configuration repository also includes metadata used to describe each of the programming elements. Selected programming elements are placed in a set of one or more migration scripts to be stored in the migration package. The set of migration scripts may include a master configuration file and a driver file.

3. The method of claim 2 where the end-user platform specific information is specific for a database platform.

4. The method of claim 2 where the migration steps comprise a SQL migration step and a server command line migration step.

5. The method of claim 1 where the selection of the plurality of programming elements from the configuration repository comprises:

selecting the plurality of programming elements associated to a particular migration process type.

6. The method of claim 1 where the metadata describing the plurality of programming elements comprises a migration phase and a migration step.

7. The method of claim 1 where the software migration includes a software installation and a software upgrade.

8. The method of claim 1 where the plurality of programming elements is stored in a particular sequence order in the migration scripts.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

delivering the migration package to an end-user.

10. The method of claim 9 where the delivering includes delivering the migration package to the end-user by way of a set of one or more CD-ROMs, a ftp server, a set of one or more floppy disks, and a transmission over a communications medium.

11. An apparatus to build a migration package comprising:

a configuration repository, the configuration repository to store a plurality of programming elements and metadata, the metadata to describe the plurality of programming elements, wherein the metadata identifies a migration process type, a database version of an end-user platform, and migration steps needed to perform a software migration for the migration process type and the database version; and

a migration assembler, the migration assembler to extract a programming element from the configuration repository to make a set of one or more migration scripts to be stored in a migration package for the end-user platform, the set migration scripts to include the selected plurality of programming elements.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 where the set of one or more migration scripts includes:

a master configuration file, the master configuration file to include end-user platform specific information; and

a driver file, the driver file to include migration steps.

13. The apparatus of claim 11 where the metadata describing the plurality of programming elements comprises a migration phase and a migration step.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 where the extraction of the plurality of programming elements includes selecting the plurality of programming elements associated to a particular migration process type.

15. The apparatus of claim 11 where the migration scripts are stored in the migration package to be delivered to an end-user.

16. The apparatus of claim 11 where the migration scripts are to perform a software migration.

17. The apparatus of claim 16 where the software migration includes a software installation and a software upgrade.

18. The apparatus of claim 11 where the plurality of programming elements are stored in a particular sequence order in the migration scripts.

19. A machine-readable storage medium to store instructions, which when executed by a set of one or more processors, cause the set of processors to perform a method to build a migration package, the method comprising:

developing a plurality of programming elements, the plurality of programming elements to perform a software migration;

storing the plurality of programming elements in a configuration repository, the configuration repository the plurality of programming elements and metadata describing the plurality of programming elements, wherein the metadata identifies a migration process type, a database version of an end-user platform, and migration steps needed to perform the software migration for the migration process type and the database version;

selecting one or more of the plurality of programming elements using the metadata; and

generating a set of one or more migration scripts to be stored in a migration package for the end-user platform, the set of migration scripts to include the selected plurality of programming elements.

20. The machine-readable storage medium of claim 19 where the set of migration scripts includes:

a master configuration file, the master configuration file to include end-user platform specific information; and

a driver file, the driver file to include migration steps.

21. The machine-readable storage medium of claim 20 where the end-user platform specific information is specific for a database platform.

22. The machine-readable storage medium of claim 20 where the migration steps comprise a SQL migration step and a server command line migration step.

23. The machine-readable storage medium of claim 19 where the selection of the plurality of programming elements from the configuration repository comprises:

selecting the plurality of programming elements associated to a particular migration process type.

24. The machine-readable storage medium of claim 19 where the metadata describing the plurality of programming elements comprises a migration phase and a migration step.

25. The machine-readable storage medium of claim 19 where the software migration includes a software installation and a software upgrade.
