Abstract

Uniformly sized and shaped particles of metal salts are provided comprised of one or more metal cations in combination with one or more simple oxoacid anions and a general method for the controlled precipitation of said metal salts from aqueous solutions. The methods proceed via the in situ homogeneous production of simple or complex oxoacid anions in which one or more of the nonmetallic elements e.g. Group 5B and 6B (chalcogenides), and 7B (halides) comprising the first oxoacid anion undergo oxidation to generate the precipitant anionic species along with concurrent reduction of the nonmetallic element of a second, dissimilar oxoacid anion. The oxoacid anions are initially present in solution with one or more metal cations known to form insoluble salts with the precipitant anion.

Claims (31)

1. A method for making a calcium phosphate comprising the steps of:

providing an aqueous solution comprising a calcium source, at least one oxidizing agent, and at least one phosphite-containing anion oxidizable by said agent to form a phosphate;

initiating an oxidation-reduction reaction between said oxidizing agent and the phosphite-containing anion, said reaction evolving at least one gas and giving rise to a precursor solid, the oxidation-reduction reaction being maintained at a first temperature;

heating the precursor solid to a second temperature greater than the first temperature for a time sufficient to provide the calcium phosphate;

said calcium phosphate comprised of crystallites having a crystal size of less than about 1 micron.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the first temperature is about 250° C. or less.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the second temperature is about 500° C. or less.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the second temperature is about 800° C. or greater.

5. The calcium phosphate prepared by the method of claim 1 having a crystal size of less than about 1 micron.

6. The calcium phosphate prepared by the method of claim 1 wherein the calcium phosphate is of claim 5 wherein the calcium phosphate comprises a β-tricalcium phosphate.

7. The β-tricalcium phosphate of claim 6 comprising individual crystallites having a crystal size of about 20 nm or below.

8. The β-tricalcium phosphate of claim 7 comprising individual crystallites having a crystal size of about 150 nm or below.

9. The β-tricalcium phosphate of claim 8 comprising individual crystallites having a crystal size of about 100 nm or below.

10. A calcium phosphate bioceramic, the bioceramic comprised of:

a plurality of individual crystallites having a crystal size of about 200 nm or below; and

a combination of pore sizes comprising pore diameters which range from about 10 microns or below, from about 10 microns and 100 microns, and from about 100 microns or greater.

11. The calcium phosphate bioceramic of claim 10 wherein the bioceramic is substantially homogeneous.

12. A method for forming biocompatible and bioactive calcium phosphate comprising the steps of:

preparing an aqueous solution of a phosphorous oxoacid and a calcium nitrate;

heating the solution to a temperature of about 250° C. or below under conditions of temperature and pressure effective to initiate an oxidation-reduction reaction between the oxoacid and the calcium nitrate wherein a calcium phosphate salt precipitates from the solution; and

heating the calcium phosphate salt to a temperature of about 500° C. or greater effective to form the calcium phosphate.

13. A method for making an alkaline earth phosphate comprising the steps of:

providing an aqueous solution comprising at least one alkaline earth cation, at least one oxidizing agent, and at least one phosphite-containing anion oxidizable by said oxidizing agent to form a phosphate;

initiating an oxidation-reduction reaction between said oxidizing agent and the phosphite-containing anion, said reaction evolving at least one gas and giving rise to a precursor solid, the oxidation-reduction reaction being maintained at a first temperature;

heating the precursor solid to a second temperature greater than the first temperature for a time sufficient to provide the alkaline earth phosphate;

and said alkaline earth phosphate comprised of crystallites having a crystal size of less than about 1 micron.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein the alkaline earth cations are selected from the group containing Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, and Ra.

15. A method for forming an alkaline earth phosphate comprising the steps of:

providing an aqueous solution comprising at least one alkaline earth cation, at least one oxidizing agent, and at least one phosphite-containing anion oxidizable by said oxidizing agent to form a phosphate;

initiating an oxidation-reduction reaction between said oxidizing agent and the phosphite-containing anion, said reaction evolving at least one gas and giving rise to a precursor solid, the oxidation-reduction reaction being maintained at a first temperature of about 250° C.;

heating the precursor solid to a second temperature of about 800° C. for a time sufficient to provide the alkaline earth phosphate.
