Abstract

One aspect of the preferred embodiment relates to an application framework for managing mobile clients and application programs. By utilizing the preferred embodiment, a system administrator may be provided the capability to manage and control multiple devices, directly and indirectly, using push (server-initiated) and/or pull (client-initiated) techniques from a single location. Additionally, the preferred embodiment may be utilized to back up and securely store information on the mobile clients, identify device usage and to deliver files and databases to the mobile clients.

Claims (51)

1. A method for optimizing a data transmission comprising:

determining a maximum transfer unit for a session based on a size of payload records to be transmitted;

formatting a first of said payload records into a data payload portion of a transmission packet;

if said first payload record is smaller than said maximum transfer unit, determining a partial portion only of a next payload record needed to fill said data payload portion of said transmission packet;

formatting said partial portion only of said next payload record into said data payload portion of said transmission packet together with said first payload record;

transmitting said transmission packet; and

formatting a subsequent data payload record of a subsequent packet to include a remainder of said next payload record and at least a portion of a subsequent record to fill said subsequent data payload.

2. The method for optimizing a data transmission according to claim 1 , wherein:

a size of said data payload portion of said transmission packet is modified while said session is being transmitted if a payload record to be transmitted is determined to be larger than said maximum transmission unit.

3. The method for optimizing a data transmission according to claim 2 , wherein:

said transmission of said transmission packet utilizes a TCP/IP network protocol.

4. The method for optimizing a data transmission according to claim 3 , wherein:

said maximum transmission unit is determined from functions of TCP/IP network protocol.

5. The method for optimizing a data transmission according to claim 1 , wherein:

said transmission of said transmission packet is executed from one of a mobile client and an application server.

6. The method for optimizing a data transmission according to claim 1 , further comprising:

comparing a current one of said payload records of said session to said maximum transfer unit; and

retrieving said next payload record if said current payload record is less than said maximum transfer unit.

7. An apparatus having optimized data transmissions, comprising:

means for determining a maximum transfer unit for a session based on a size of payload records to be transmitted;

means for formatting a first of said payload records into a data payload portion of a transmission packet;

means for determining a partial portion only of a next payload record needed to fill said data payload portion of said transmission packet, said partial portion being determined if said first payload record is smaller than said maximum transfer unit;

means for formatting said partial portion only of said next payload record into said data payload portion of said transmission packet together with said first payload record;

means for transmitting said transmission packet; and

means for formatting a subsequent data payload record of a subsequent packet to include a remainder of said next payload record and at least a portion of a subsequent record to fill said subsequent data payload.

8. The apparatus having optimized data transmissions according to claim 7 , wherein:

a size of said data payload portion of said transmission packet is modified while said session is being transmitted if a payload record to be transmitted is determined to be larger than said maximum transmission unit.

9. The apparatus having optimized data transmissions according to claim 8 , wherein:

said transmission of said transmission packet utilizes a TCP/IP network protocol.

10. The apparatus having optimized data transmissions according to claim 9 , wherein:

said maximum transmission unit is determined from functions of TCP/IP network protocol.

11. The apparatus having optimized data transmissions according to claim 7 , wherein:

said transmission of said transmission packet is executed from one of a mobile client and an application server.

12. The apparatus having optimized data transmissions according to claim 7 , further comprising:

means for comparing a current one of said payload records of said session to said maximum transfer unit; and

means for retrieving said next payload record if said current payload record is less than said maximum transfer unit.

13. An apparatus having optimized data transmissions, comprising:

a first determiner to determine a maximum transfer unit for a session based on a size of payload records to be transmitted;

a first formatter to format a first of said payload records into a data payload portion of a transmission packet;

a second determiner to determine a partial portion only of a next payload record needed to fill said data payload portion of said transmission packet, said partial portion being determined if said first payload record is smaller than said maximum transfer unit;

a formatter to format said partial portion only of said next payload record into said data payload portion of said transmission packet together with said first payload record;

a transmitter to transmit said transmission packet; and

a module to format a subsequent data payload record of a subsequent packet to include a remainder of said next payload record and at least a portion of a subsequent record to fill said subsequent data payload.

14. The apparatus having optimized data transmissions according to claim 13 , wherein:

a size of said data payload portion of said transmission packet is modified while said session is being transmitted if a payload record to be transmitted is determined to be larger than said maximum transmission unit.

15. The apparatus having optimized data transmissions according to claim 13 , wherein:

said transmitter transmits said transmission packet utilizing a TCP/IP network protocol.

16. The apparatus having optimized data transmissions according to claim 13 , wherein:

said maximum transmission unit is determined from functions of TCP/IP network protocol.

17. The apparatus having optimized data transmissions according to claim 13 , wherein:

said transmitter transmits said transmission packet from one of a mobile client and an application server.
