Abstract

Automatic transmission of information is generated when the content of a posted electronic form matches a predefined criteria. An interface allows the user to create a criterion template to specify the match criterion without requiring the user to have the skills of a professional programmer. The person to be notified and the form and content of the notification can also be defined by the user and can be dependent on the content of the posted form. In one application, individuals associated with an institution of higher learning are automatically notified when a student submits an electronic profile form showing that the student meets a pre-specified criteria.

Claims (26)

1. A method of simplifying workflow and improving responsiveness for an institution by conditionally messaging one or more parties based upon data entered by a user into a web form, comprising:

presenting a form on behalf of the institution over a computer network to a form user to enter data;

presenting to the institution a web-based template through which the institution can specify a message, one or more recipients for that message, and a combination of one or more fields and the corresponding field value or values which if matched by data submitted from a form user will automatically cause delivery of that message to the one or more recipients;

comparing data entered by a form user to each combination of the one or more fields and the corresponding field value or values so specified by the institution, and

upon detecting a match, delivering the specified message to the one or more recipients.

2. The method of claim 1 in which comparing data entered by a form user to each combination of the one or more fields and the corresponding field value or values so specified by an institution includes comparing, as the completed form is received, data entered by a form user.

3. The method of claim 1 in which each of the steps is performed by a third party that is neither the institution nor the form user.

4. The method of claim 1 in which delivering the specified message to the one or more recipients includes delivering a message that includes at least some of the data entered by the form user.

5. The method of claim 1 in which delivering the specified message to the one or more recipients includes delivering the specified message to one or more recipients determined by the content of the submitted data.

6. The method of claim 1 in which delivering the specified message to the one or wore recipients includes sending an e-mail to the one or more recipients.

7. The method of claim 1 in which delivering the specified message to the one or more recipients includes downloading a tile to one or more computers used by the one or more recipients.

8. The method of claim 1 in which comparing data entered by a form user to each combination of the one or more fields includes using a search engine to compare stored entries corresponding to data submitted from forms users with the combinations of one or more fields on web-based templates newly completed by the institution.

9. In a computer readable medium, computer readable instructions for performing the method of claim 1 .

10. An apparatus for simplifying workflow and improving responsiveness for an institution by conditionally messaging one or more parties based upon data entered by a user into a web form, the apparatus comprising:

a central processing unit;

a computer memory, die computer memory storing instructions for:

presenting a form on behalf of the institution aver a computer network to a form user to enter data;

presenting to the institution a web-based template through which the institution can specify a message, one or more recipients for that message, and a combination of one or more fields and the corresponding field value or values which if matched by data submitted from a form user will automatically cause delivery of that message to the one or more recipients;

comparing data entered by a form user to each combination of the one or more fields and the corresponding field value or values so specified by the institution, and

upon detecting a match, delivering the specific message to the one or more recipients.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 in which the software instructions for comparing date entered by the form user to each combination of the one or more fields and the corresponding field value or values so specified by the institution include instructions for comparing as the completed form is received data entered by a form user.

12. The apparatus of claim 10 in which the software instructions for delivering the specified message to the one or more recipients include instructions for delivering a message that includes at least some of the data entered by the form user.

13. The apparatus of claim 10 in which the software instructions for delivering the specified message to the one or more recipients include instructions for delivering the specified message to one or more recipients determined by the content of the submitted data.

14. The apparatus of claim 10 in which the software instructions for delivering the specified message to the one or more recipients include instructions for sending an e-mail to the one or more recipients.

15. The apparatus of claim 10 in which the software instruction for delivering the specified message to the one or more recipient includes instructions for downloading a file to one or more computers used by the one or more recipients.

16. The apparatus of claim 10 in wherein the software instructions for comparing data entered by a form user to each combination of the one or more fields includes instructions for using a search engine to comparing stored entries corresponding to data submitted from forms users with the combinations of one or more fields on web-based templates newly completed by the institution.
