Abstract

A polyaxial drill guide includes a body, a collet and a stem. The collet includes a collet shaft having distal and proximal ends and a longitudinal bore. The body includes a conical bore having narrow and wide ends. The distal end of the collet shaft rotatably mounts within the narrow end of the conical bore, with the collet shaft extending toward the wide end of the conical bore, such that the collet shaft (and consequently the longitudinal bore) can be angled within the conical bore at a plurality of angles. The stem includes a shaft having distal and proximal ends and a longitudinal bore. The distal end of the stem shaft mounts to the proximal end of the collet shaft such that the longitudinal bores are co-linear and a drill bit can be inserted into and rotated within the longitudinal bores during a drilling procedure.

Claims (13)

1. A drill guide, comprising:

a body having a conical bore, the conical bore having a major axis and a wide end and a narrow end and a socket formed near the narrow end, the socket having a proximal opening leading into the conical bore and a distal opening opposite the proximal opening;

a guide member having a shaft having a distal end and a proximal end and a longitudinal bore, the distal end having a semi-spherical outer surface portion through which the longitudinal bore extends; wherein

the shaft of the guide member extends through the proximal opening and towards the wide end of the conical bore and the semi-spherical outer surface portion is rotatably mounted within the socket so that the guide member shaft is angulatable at a plurality of angles with respect to the major axis of the conical bore.

2. The drill guide of claim 1 , further comprising an extension member having a shaft having a distal end and a proximal end and a longitudinal bore, wherein the distal end of the extension member shaft is mounted to the proximal end of the guide member shaft such that the longitudinal bore of the guide member shaft and the longitudinal bore of the extension member shaft are co-linear.

3. The drill guide of claim 2 , wherein the mounting is provided by an outer threading on one of the distal end of the extension member shaft and the proximal end of the guide member shaft, and an inner threading on the other of the distal end of the extension member shaft and the proximal end of the guide member shaft, the inner threading matching the outer threading for mutual engageability.

4. The drill guide of claim 2 , wherein the distal end of the extension member shaft is provided with a conformation that confronts the body near the wide end of the conical bore so as to limit movement of the extension member shaft toward the narrow end of the conical bore.

5. The drill guide of claim 4 , wherein the conformation includes at least one flange.

6. The drill guide of claim 4 , wherein the diameter of the semi-spherical outer surface portion is greater than the proximal opening of the socket so as to prevent movement of the semi-spherical surface portion into the conical bore.

7. The drill guide of claim 1 , wherein the semi-spherical outer surface portion has a contour and the socket has at least one curvate wall following at least a portion of the contour of the semi-spherical outer surface portion.

8. The drill guide of claim 7 , wherein the socket is a ball-shaped socket having a diameter greater than the distal opening and greater than the proximal opening, and wherein the diameter of the semi-spherical outer surface portion is greater than the distal opening and greater than the proximal opening so as to prevent movement of the semi-spherical outer surface portion out of the socket.

9. The drill guide of claim 8 , wherein the semi-spherical outer surface portion is radially compressible so as to be passable through at least one of the openings of the socket.

10. The drill guide of claim 9 , wherein the semi-spherical outer surface portion has a slot that allows the semi-spherical outer surface portion to be radially compressed.
