Abstract

A method for compensating for polarization mode dispersion of an incoming optical communications signal including the step of orienting the state of polarization of the incoming optical communications signal with respect to the axes of a polarization splitter. The communications signal is split into a first and a second orthogonal states of polarization at a split point. The first of the polarization states is directed to a first birefringent optical waveguide having a first chirped grating having a first reference reflection point. The second of the polarization states is directed to a second birefringent optical waveguide having a second chirped grating having a chirp pattern substantially similar to that of the first chirped grating and having a second reference reflection point. The optical path length from the second reflection point to the split point is adjustably varied to compensate for polarization dispersion between the first and second states of polarization. The first and second polarization states are then recombined into an output signal.

Claims (22)

1. A method for compensating for polarization mode and chromatic dispersion of an incoming optical communications signal, the method comprising the steps of:

a. orienting a state of polarization of the incoming optical communications signal with respect to axes of a polarization splitter;

b. splitting the communications signal into a first and a second orthogonal states of polarization at a split point;

c. directing the first of the polarization states to a first birefringent optical waveguide having a first chirped grating having a first reference reflection point;

d. directing the second of the polarization states to a second birefringent optical waveguide having a second chirped grating having a chirp pattern substantially similar to that of the first chirped grating and having a second reference reflection point;

e. adjustably varying the optical path length from the second reflection point to the split point to compensate for polarization dispersion between the first and second states of polarization;

f. recombining the first and second polarization states into a recombined signal; and

g. sending the recombined signal through a variable chromatic/2 nd order PMD compensator.

2. The method of claim 1 , the method further comprising the steps of:

a. sampling the quality of the signal output from the variable chromatic/2 nd order PMD compensator;

b. adaptively adjusting the state of polarization of the incoming signal and the optical path length of the second reflection point in response to the quality of the output signal.

3. The method of claim 1 , the method further comprising the steps of:

a. sampling the quality of the signal output from the variable chromatic/2 nd order PMD compensator;

b. adaptively adjusting the optical path length from the second reflection point to the split point in response to the quality of the output signal.

4. The method of claim 1 , the method further comprising the steps of:

a. prior to the step of adjustably varying the optical path length from the second reflection point, tuning the optical path length of at least one of the gratings such that the second reflection point is substantially at the same optical path length from the split point as the first reflection point.

5. The method of claim 1 , the method further comprising the steps of:

a. prior to the step of adjustably varying the optical path length from the second reflection point, tuning the optical path length of at least one of the gratings such that the second reflection point has a shorter optical path length from the split point than the first reflection point, wherein the difference in the optical path length is a factor of an expected polarization dispersion delay between the first and second orthogonal states of polarization mode dispersion.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and second gratings are linearly chirped.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the variable chromatic/2 nd order PMD compensator comprises a non-linearly chirped grating.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the non-linearly chirped grating is tuned to adjust a level of chirp.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the non-linearly chirped grating includes a chirp rate that varies from about 200 ps/nm to about 1200 ps/nm.
