Abstract

An apparatus and method for performing a surgery, especially an Anterior Cruciate Ligament replacement surgery, where a flexible strand insertion rod cooperates with a U-Guide apparatus to insert a flexible strand into a tunnel formed in a bone portion and to guide a drill point to form a tunnel transversely to the tunnel of the insertion rod. The drill point is guided through the insertion rod and the flexible strand is held over the drill point as the transverse tunnel is formed. The insertion rod is then removed from the tunnels formed in the bone and the flexible strand is held looped over the drill point. Subsequently, a soft tissue replacement is affixed to one end of the flexible strand and pulled over the drill point with the other end of the flexible strand. The drill point is then used to pull a cross pin through the transverse tunnel to hold the looped end of the soft tissue replacement in place. Finally, the two free ends of the soft tissue replacement are affixed to the bone completing the implantation of a soft tissue replacement.

Claims (32)

1. A method of surgically attaching a soft tissue replacement to at least a bone member, comprising:

inserting an insertion rod comprising a guide portion into a first tunnel of the bone member, wherein a flexible strand is pre-loaded on said guide portion;

operably interconnecting the insertion rod with an external guide member defining a guide section;

aligning a tunnel forming device, at least in part through the guide section of the external guide member, with said guide portion of the insertion rod;

forming a second tunnel transverse and through said first tunnel and said insertion rod with said tunnel forming device;

inserting a retaining member in the formed second tunnel;

retaining said flexible strand within said first tunnel with the retaining member; and

removing said insertion rod from said first tunnel.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of forming said second tunnel includes aligning a drill bit using said external guide member.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the steps of:

forming said first tunnel in a first bone member; and

forming a third tunnel in a second bone member, wherein said first tunnel and said third tunnel are generally aligned when formed.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising

affixing a soft tissue replacement to a first end of said flexible strand; and

pulling said soft tissue over the retaining member in said first tunnel and back out said first tunnel; and

affixing the soft tissue to the bone.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein said step of forming said transverse tunnel comprises aligning said tool bit to form said transverse tunnel using said insertion rod.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the retaining member is a tool bit and retaining said flexible strand in said first tunnel includes retaining said flexible strand with a tool bit.

7. The method of claim 1 , comprises the further steps of:

affixing said insertion rod to said external guide member; and

fitting a keyed portion of said insertion rod into a keyed portion of said external guide member, wherein said guide portion and a passage are aligned.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein said guide section comprises a passage in said external guide member.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

positioning a pin in the second tunnel transverse to the first tunnel.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein positioning the pin includes:

connecting the pin to the retaining member; and

pulling the pin into the second tunnel with the retaining member.

11. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

affixing a soft tissue replacement to a first end of said flexible strand; and

pulling said soft tissue over the pin in said first tunnel and back out said first tunnel.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

affixing the soft tissue to the bone member.
