Abstract

A method and a device are provided for detecting the respiratory activity of a person and for controlling the time progression of breathing gas pressure, especially in accordance with physical parameters and considering parameters indicating the momentary physiological condition of the breathing person. The device for detecting the respiratory activity of a person has at least one sensor that provides a first signal indicating the breathing gas flow, wherein at least one signal processing device is provided for processing the first signal. The signal processing device is configured in such a way that said device determines a reference-relation on the basis of the first signal detected during a first time interval. On the basis thereof, the device determines a correlation-relation between the reference-relation and the first signal. The device generates an output signal indicating the respiratory activity and/or the physiological condition of the breathing person by considering at least the correlation-relation.

Claims (30)

1. Device to detect breathing activity of a person comprising:

a flow sensor to supply a first signal indicative of breathing gas flow; and

at least one signal processor to process said first signal;

said signal processor being arranged so as to generate:

a reference-relation on the basis of said first signal detected over a first time period, wherein a duration of said first time period is set so as to cover at least two breathing cycles; and

a correlation-relation between said reference-relation and said first signal;

said signal processor being further arranged so as to:

generate on the basis of an observation of said correlation-relation an output signal which is indicative with respect to the breathing activity and/or the physiological condition of the breathing person; and

adjust the breathing gas pressure control in accordance with said output signal.

2. Device according to claim 1 , further comprising a pressure to supply a second signal indicative with respect to the dynamic and/or static breathing gas pressure.

3. Device according to claim 2 , further comprising a filter to filter and/or dampen at least one of said first signal and said second signal.

4. Device according to claim 3 , wherein said filter includes parameters that are adaptively changed.

5. Device according to claim 1 , wherein said signal processor is configured to smooth said reference-relation on the basis of selected smoothing criteria.

6. Device according to claim 5 , wherein said smoothing criteria are adaptively changed.

7. Device according to claim 1 , wherein said signal processor is configured to smoothen said reference-relation.

8. Device according to claim 7 , wherein said signal processor is arranged so as to smoothen on the basis of static concepts.

9. Device according to claim 1 , wherein said signal processor is configured to analyze said correlation-relation with respect to threshold-criteria which may include zero-crossings.

10. Device according to claim 1 , wherein said signal processor comprises a counter to count occurrence of predetermined criteria within a predetermined time period.

11. Device to deliver a breathable gas towards a patient, said device including:

a pressure controller to control the pressure of said breathable gas delivery to the patient; and

a detector to detect the activity of said person, said detector including:

a flow sensor to supply a first signal indicative with respect to breathing gas flow; and

at least one signal processor to process said first signal;

said signal processor being configured so as to generate:

a reference-relation on the basis of said first signal detected over a first time period, said first time period being set so as to cover at least two breathing cycles; and

a correlation-relation between said reference-relation and said first signal;

said signal processor being further configured so as to generate on the basis of an observation of said correlation-relation an output signal which is indicative with respect to the breathing activity and/or the physiological condition of the breathing person;

wherein the pressure of said breathable gas as controlled by said pressure controller is adjustable in accordance with said output signal.

12. Device for monitoring breathing gas supplied to a patient above ambient pressure, comprising at least one detector to produce a signal relating to breathing gas pressure and/or breathing gas flow; and a signal processor adapted to generate a reference-relation on the basis of said signal and to adjust the breathing gas pressure on the basis of a correlation-relation between said reference-relation and a prevailing breathing pattern.

13. Device according to claim 12 , further comprising a breathing gas conduit to feed said breathing gas.
