Abstract

The invention relates to absorbents for water and aqueous liquids, which absorbents are based on water-swellable, yet water-insoluble polymers wherein zeolites high in silicon have been incorporated ionically and/or as a result of mechanical inclusion.

Claims (26)

1. An absorbent, crosslinked polymer for water or aqueous body fluids, based on optionally partially neutralized, monoethylenically unsaturated monomers bearing acid groups, wherein the absorbent, crosslinked polymer has zeolites high in silicon at least partially bound ionically thereto or incorporated therein and wherein the zeolites have a silicon dioxide/aluminum oxide ratio greater than 20.

2. The absorbent, crosslinked polymer according to claim 1 , wherein the polymer comprises at least 0.01 to 10 wt.% of zeolites high in silicon.

3. An absorbent, crosslinked polymer for water or aqueous body fluids, based on optionally partially neutralized, monoethylenically unsaturated monomers bearing acid groups,

wherein the absorbent, crosslinked polymer has at least 0.01 to 10 wt. % of zeolites high in silicon that are at least partially bound ionically thereto or incorporated therein, and

wherein the absorbent, crosslinked polymer has at least 0.01 to 10 wt. % of zeolites high in silicon that are at least partially bound ionically thereto or incorporated therein, and

wherein the zeolite has a silicon dioxide/aluminum oxide ratio in its skeleton of greater than 20.

4. The absorbent, crosslinked polymer according to claim 3 , wherein the polymer is constituted up to 30% of further monoethylenically unsaturated monomers other than the monomers bearing acid groups.

5. The absorbent, crosslinked polymer according to claim 3 , wherein the polymer has 40 wt. % of a water-soluble, natural or synthetic polymer incorporated therein by polymerization and/or graft polymerization.

6. An absorbent, crosslinked polymer for water or aqueous body fluids, based on optionally partially neutralized, monoethylenically unsaturated monomers bearing acid groups,

wherein the absorbent, crosslinked polymer has zeolites high in silicon at least partially bound ionically thereto or incorporated therein, and

wherein the absorbent, crosslinked polymer has been coated with 0.01 to 30 wt.% relative to the polymer, of a crosslinker component which reacts with at least two carboxylic groups in the surface layer of the polymer particles, thereby effecting crosslining.

7. A process for producing an absorbent, crosslinked polymer for water or aqueous body fluids, wherein the absorbent, crosslinked polymer has zeolites high in silicon at least partially bound ionically thereto or incorporated therein, the process comprising free-radical polymerization of an aqueous solution of ethylenically unsaturated, optionally partially neutralized monomers bearing acid groups, optionally up to 30 wt. % of further monoethylenically unsaturated comonomers, crosslinking monomers, and optionally partially neutralized monomers bearing acid groups, optionally up to 30 wt. % of further monoethylenically unsaturated comonomers, crosslinking monomers, and optionally up to 40 wt. % of a water soluble natural or synthetic polymer according to the process of solution or suspension polymerization to form a hydrogel, optional isolation, crushing, followed by drying, milling/screening, and secondary surface crosslinking, wherein the zeolite high in silicon is added to the absorbent, crosslinked polymer during its surface crosslinking at the latest.

8. The process for producing the absorbent, crosslinked polymers according to claim 1 , by free-radical polymerization of an aqueous solution of ethylenically unsaturated, optionally partially neutralized monomers bearing acid groups, optionally up to 30 wt. % of further monoethylenically unsaturated comonomers, crosslinking monomers, and optionally up to 40 wt. % of a water-soluble natural or synthetic polymer according to the process of solution of suspension polymerization to form a hydrogel, optional isolation, crushing, followed by drying, milling/screening, wherein the zeolite high in silicon is added to the absorbent, crosslinked polymer at a water content of greater than 10 wt. %.

9. The process according to claim 8 , wherein the water content is greater than 30 wt. %.

10. An article having improved absorption to claim 8 , wherein the water content is greater than 30 wt. %.

11. An absorbent for aqueous liquid, the absorbent including the absorbent crosslinked polymer according to claim 1 , wherein the absorbent may be in the form of a construction for absorbing body fluids; in foamed sheet materials; in packaging materials; in plant breeding and as soil improver.

12. A hygiene article comprising the absorbent crosslinked polymer according to claim 1 .

13. A stabilizer for active substances, particularly fertilizers or other active substances being released optionally in a delayed fashion, wherein the stabilizer comprises the absorbent crosslinked polymer according to claim 1 .

14. The absorbent, crosslinked polymer according to claim 2 , wherein the absorbent, crosslinked polymer comrprises at least 0.1 to 5 wt. % of zeolites high in silicon.

15. The absorbent, crosslinked polymer according to claim 14 , wherein the absorbent, crosslinked polymer comprises at least 0.7 to 3 wt.% of zeolites high in silicon.
