Abstract

A guide bushing for a coring reamer having a tapered member with its largest diameter at its first end so that the guide bushing frictionally engages an internal surface of the reamer with a line contact. The guide bushing has a passage sized to slidably receive a guide pin. In use, the bushing advances in the proximal direction within the coring reamer along a guide pin while the excavated bone enters the passageway through the reamer. A storage package specifically designed for the reamer assembly is employed to remove the excavated bone from within the reamer. The package has a closed distal end and an open proximal end closeable with a cap. With the coring reamer received in cantilevered fashion through a central opening of the cap of the tube, and with an adapter that couples the coring reamer to a handpiece installed, a wrench is placed over the adapter and turned while the user grips peripheral surfaces of the cap to prevent rotation of the coring reamer. A plunger is inserted through the opening through the coring reamer from the proximal end and is pushed through the reamer until the bone core and bushing fall out of the distal end of the coring reamer.

Claims (9)

1. A package for selective storage of a coring reamer before and after use, the package comprising an elongated tubular body having a closed distal end, a proximal end having a first opening and an internal portion of the body between the first opening and distal end devoid of any structure, said first opening closeable by a cap with an enlarged periphery with respect to the first opening, the cap having a distal cylindrical portion receivable within the first opening, said cap having a second opening extending therethrough, the second opening in said cap having a non-circular portion configured to non-rotatably receive a proximal portion of a coring reamer therein.

2. The package of claim 1 , wherein the body is transparent.

3. The package of claim 1 , wherein the cap further comprises an external gripping surface along the enlarged periphery.

4. The package of claim 3 , wherein the enlarged periphery comprises at least two concave surfaces facilitating gripping thereof.

5. The package of claim 1 , wherein the non-circular portion of the cap is hexagonal.

6. The package of claim 5 , wherein the proximal portion of the coring reamer is hexagonal.

7. The package of claim 4 , wherein the at least two concave surfaces comprise four concave surfaces.

8. The package of claim 1 , further including a plunger having a stem sized to slide through a passage through a coring reamer received in the second opening.

9. A package for storage of a coring reamer before and after use, the package comprising an elongated body having a closed distal end and a proximal end having a first opening closeable by a cap, the cap having a second opening extending therethrough, the second opening in the cap having a non-circular portion configured to non-rotatably receive a proximal portion of the coring reamer therein and a plunger having a stem sized to slide through a passage through the coring reamer received in the second opening.
